Intensive Care Senior Registrar/Advanced Trainee

The Waikato Hospital Department of Critical Care is the largest single-site tertiary ICU that attends to all clinical specialties, from neurosurgery to cardiac surgery, plastic surgery and almost anything else imaginable, in New Zealand.

As part of our size and scale we have created roles for advanced trainees in intensive care, to span the gap between run-of-the-mill registrar roles, and the by now well-established fellow positions that prepare trainees for life as a specialist.

As an advanced trainee you will be required to carry out a mix of service and supervision roles, and will have some time set aside for non-clinical work. Your involvement in the roster will be weighted towards daytime participation.

The positions come with a special interest arrangements negotiated with the interested candidates. The special interest positions available are: General ICU, Cardiac ICU or medical simulation. The trainees can interchange after 6 months into the other special interest group.

We have a position available to start in December 2019 for six or twelve months. To be eligible you will need to have at least two years of ICU experience in a large and complex ICU environment, and you will need to have at least “part 1” of a fellowship examination (anaesthesia, intensive care, or similar) under your belt and PGY 4 or above.

If you are an overseas doctor would you please visit the Medical Council of New Zealand web site to ensure that your qualifications meet their criteria for registration to practice medicine in New Zealand.

The direct link to their self-assessment page is:

You will need to complete the six questions to ascertain whether or not you are eligible for registration in NZ. If you do not have access to do the self-assessment test on-line you can contact the MCNZ by telephone: +64 4 384 7635.
