This post is funded by the NIHR Leicester BRC Cardiovascular theme and will be based in the Deportment of Cardiovascular Sciences, University of Leicester. You will work in state-of-the-art University of Leicester BHF Cardiovascular Research Centre at Glenfield Hospital. The Department of Cardiovascular Sciences of University of Leicester is recognised internationally as a centre of excellence in cardiovascular research.

The main purpose of the Fellowship is to undertake analysis of the GENVASC study, which has recruited 40,000 patients attending for a NHS cardiovascular health screen and agreed to provide a blood sample for genetics as well as well as access to their healthcare records. Cardiovascular outcomes are being monitored longitudinally. The primary research question is to determine whether the addition of genetic information, in the form of polygenic risk scores, can improves risk stratification of cardiovascular disease over existing clinical risk scores. In addition, the GENVASC dataset provides an excellent opportunity for answering a range of linked research questions.

In addition to the GENVASC Study, the Fellow will also have access to other leading resources studies for epidemiological and genomic research including the GRAPHIC Study (with subjects re-phenotyped after 10 years), the BRICCS Study and the GENECAST (a collection of patients with aortic valve disease).

The primary supervisor will be Professor Nilesh Samani, Professor of Cardiology. The post is ideal for someone who has an interest in, and an appetite for, epidemiological/genetic research. Some experience of handling coded clinical data for research would be an advantage. The post is available for two years in the first instance and there will be an opportunity to register for a higher degree.

Informal enquiries are welcome and can be made to Andrea Marshall on aem26@le.ac.uk.

We anticipate interviews for the role will take place on the 22nd November 2019.
