Consultant Rheumatologist

Anticipated Start Date: Immediately

One based at Nevill Hall Hospital, one based at the Royal Gwent Hospital

Closing Date for Applications: Midnight on 24th October 2019

Applications are invited for a dynamic and enthusiastic Consultant to join our Rheumatology team at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board. The successful applicant will be joining the team at an exciting time with the advent of our Clinical Futures programme which will bring with it changes to the way services are delivered across the Health Board.

To attract the right individual, this post comes with 3 SPA sessions. This will allow the successful candidate to contribute to improvements in service delivery and enhance the development of a rewarding career. The contract will be offered on a 10-session basis and will include cross-site working.

The successful applicant will form part of a well-established Rheumatology multi-disciplinary team which provides a service to the population of South East Wales. The team currently comprises 5 Consultants (excluding the advertised post), a specialist registrar, a full team of Rheumatology Clinical Nurse Specialists and dedicated support from the Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Pharmacy services. The post comes its own named secretary.

The post holder will be fully involved in education, research and development and clinical audit programmes and will be expected to play a major part in the academic development of the Rheumatology Service in South East Wales. Evidence of a commitment to research and teaching is therefore essential. A specialist interest that complements the existing areas of specialisation in Gwent (osteoporosis, early inflammatory arthritis, connective tissue disease) would be encouraged.

The Rheumatology Service endeavours to provide an equitable, Gwent-wide service for all patients. Access to inpatients and outpatient clinics are provided at the Royal Gwent, Nevill Hall and Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr sites. The Biologics Infusion Service and the telephone advice line for patient are housed in the Day Unit at Nevill Hall Hospital and Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr. Both are supported by the dedicated Clinical Nurse Specialist team.

The Rheumatology Service is committed to working with General Practitioners to develop their roles in the longer-term management of patients with rheumatic diseases. The post holder will be actively involved in taking this work forward through GP discussion groups, continued education and the development of protocols and clinical pathways.

The existing Gwent Consultants are all strongly committed to the weekly South Wales, Cardiff-based academic programme and are also involved in a working party looking at the creation of a Wales Arthritis Rheumatology Network.

All existing Consultants are involved in teaching medical students from Cardiff School of Medicine during the musculoskeletal block of their training in Gwent. Regular multidisciplinary meetings on a two-month basis have also been established.

The Health Board actively supports consultant doctors to undertake funded 3 month formal sabbaticals through an annual application process.

Free parking is available across all Aneurin Bevan University Health Board Sites.

Applicants must hold full registration and a licence to practice with the GMC.

Candidates for Consultant posts must also be on the GMC Specialist Register (including via CESR/European Community Rights) or will have a CCT/CESR(CP) date within 6 months of interview.
