Whangarei Hospital offers opportunities for enthusiastic and energetic physicians to join a committed and dedicated team. The population of Northland is growing rapidly and increasing demand provides an opportunity for us to increase our workforce.

Whangarei Hospital Department of Medicine is affiliated with the University of Auckland and aligned with their research hub. Medical teams have multi-level junior staff and opportunities exist for teaching both medical students and junior doctors.

The work is both challenging and interesting, including working with a Māori population who have high health needs. New Zealand offers a chance to practise medicine in a way that is patient focussed and clinician-led - come here and practise medicine as it should be practised.

Ideally you will be a general physician (Internal Medicine Specialist) with sub specialty expertise in, but not limited to, respiratory, rheumatology, diabetes or Infectious Diseases. You will have a broad range of skills and be keen to use these to continue to build our dynamic Department of Medicine.

Typical salaries range from $199,000 to $283,000. The income tax rate for salaries over $70,000 is 33%. We offer six weeks annual leave. We also support continuing medical education up to the value of $16,000 per annum and 10 CME leave days

Whangarei Hospital is situated two hour’s drive north of Auckland in sunny Northland. It is the largest hospital in the region and provides secondary care for a diverse and growing population spread over an extensive geographical area. There is a close link to Auckland City Hospital for tertiary care provision. Your role will be to run an acute medical team and develop your sub specialty interests. You will have an opportunity to develop outreach clinics in the three peripheral hospitals in Northland as required for your subspecialty. You will have a commitment to our acute on call roster including overnight call and weekend work. There are 73 medical beds at the Whangarei Hospital including 5 in CCU.

Your work here will be challenging but fulfilling and outside of work there are a wide variety of extra-curricular activities on your doorstep. Northland boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in New Zealand. Water sports and fishing are bountiful and easily accessible within twenty minutes of the town centre. Whangarei town centre has an attractive Town Basin with water front restaurants and bars. Whangarei is very family friendly. You will find accommodation is well priced and there is a good selection of high standard primary and secondary schooling in and around the area. Further afield Auckland is just two hour’s drive away for more activities and Whangarei has its own airport with several flights every day linking directly to Auckland airport.
