The Department:

This is a replacement post due to a retirement. The successful applicant will make up a team of 46 consultants, including 3 RAF Consultants.

Amongst our consultants, we currently hold a variety of National and Trust positions. These include RCOA examiners, AAGBI Board Member, FRCEM examiner, EDIC examiner and NWAFT lead roles in transfusion, organ donation and resuscitation committee to name a few.

Work undertaken by the Department includes all the surgical specialities with the exception of cardio-thoracic, major vascular and neurosurgery. The total workload in Peterborough comprises approximately 22,000 operations per annum; there are approximately 2,700 emergency procedures carried out and over 4800 obstetric deliveries.

The Role:

The contract is full time at 10PAs (8.5 PAs DCC and 1.5 PAs SPA) per week, with any additional PAs subject to negotiation.

The post-holder, along with the other Consultants, will be responsible for the supervision of trainees within the Department and the provision of emergency anaesthetic and obstetric services.

Although this is a general anaesthetic post we would particularly welcome applications from candidates who are suitably-qualified and willing to participate in some daytime critical care cover.

The Trust is committed to Consultant led emergency surgery performed during daylight hours whenever possible. There is a dedicated consultant Anaesthetist for Emergency Anaesthesia on site from 08.00-23.00 seven days a week (changeover at 17:00) and a separate Consultant Anaesthetist for the trauma theatre 08.00-18.00. There is also a separate Obstetric Anaesthetist 08.00-18.00 Monday to Friday. The general on-call rota for 2019/20 is currently 1 in 19.

Applicants should have full GMC registration and should be either on the Specialist Register for Anaesthesia or within 6 months of completion of training on the date of interview.

Benefits the department offer:

We hope to attract applications from both new and established consultants who are looking to ensure that they get the right balance between life and work.

There is a Trust mentor programme for all new Consultant appointments as well as support from a named individual within the Department.

We are strongly family-focussed and believe in developing a solid support network amongst ourselves. We have a coffee room and rest facilities within the Department.

We support applications from consultants wishing to work flexibly.

The Area

Stamford and its surrounding villages is a popular choice amongst our Consultants and is only 20 minutes away from the hospital. Stamford is a small Georgian market town with spectacular scenery, historic charm and fantastic schools. Stamford was voted the second best place to live in Britain by a panel of judges in the Sunday Times back in 2017. Stamford is also the location of Burghley House where the world famous International Horse Trials are held annually.

Nearby Rutland is England’s smallest county and has numerous beautiful villages, market towns and gastropubs. The east of the county is easily commutable to the hospital. The village of Barrowden (where two of our Consultants live) is listed as the second best rural place to live in Britain for quality of life by the Telegraph in 2018.

Oundle and its surrounding villages are also easily commutable to the hospital. It is a Georgian market town, smaller than Stamford and famed for its school.

Schools are always an important consideration when looking at an area and there are excellent primary and secondary schools in the area covering both the state (including grammar schools) and private sector (Stamford, Uppingham, Oakham, Oundle).
