We are looking for an Obstetric Consultant to join a dynamic team of 18 Consultants in Women’s Health at Southmead Hospital, North Bristol NHS Trust, Bristol. This is an additional new post to expand and improve our Maternity Services. This is an exciting opportunity to join our team at one of the largest Maternity Units in the Country with approximately 6,300 births per annum and a NICU (Level 3).

The postholder will be the bereavement lead and will work very closely with the bereavement Midwife and the neonatal lead for bereavement. They will be responsible for the Perinatal Mortality Tool and MBRRACE. We expect them to be able to produce action plans and respond to national reports and feedback to the department recommendations etc. They would contribute to Saving Babies Lives and NHS Resolution CNST. The Trust have committed to the National Bereavement Care pathway.

There will be a bereavement clinic and in addition will be able to run and develop a rainbow clinic as part of the antenatal service.

The post will involve a regular antenatal clinic and elective caesarean section lists, delivery suite sessions as part of the hot week rota and there will also be flexible sessions to cover additional clinics or caesarean section lists. There may be the opportunity to develop other special interest sessions dependent on the departmental need.

The excellent Obstetrics services are well recognised nationally and we have been awarded 10/10 in maternity safety actions by CNST in 2018. We currently work closely with interventional radiology in the management of placenta accreta/percreta cases for Bristol and often the wider region. Pan Bristol services for both vascular surgery and Urology have been centralised at North Bristol Trust since the opening of the Brunel Building in May 2014 which has helped with the development of this service for women with abnormal placentation.

We are the home of PROMPT, PRactical Obstetric Multi-Professional Training, which is used in many hospitals in the UK and worldwide.

North Bristol NHS Trust is the largest Trust in the South West region and one of the largest Trusts in the country. Last year the Trust treated over 100,000 inpatients, over 350,000 outpatients, 90,000 emergency department patients and helped deliver over 5,500 babies. It employs more than 9,500 staff, has approximately 1,050 inpatient beds and income in excess of £540 million.

The Trust moved the majority of its acute services to the Brunel Building in May 2014 which is regarded as one of the best hospital facilities in Europe, on the Southmead Hospital site. The Trust has teaching status and is linked with the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England. The women and children’s services are delivered on the same site in a closely adjacent building.
