Consultant Post in Cellular Pathology
Applications to a Consultant Post (replacement post) in the Department of Cellular and Anatomical Pathology, based at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust are invited. The successful candidate will join our diverse team of 16 Pathologists, and up to 5 Specialist Trainees, providing a varied and interesting diagnostic service. This is a general histopathology post, however, with great flexibility and opportunities to develop areas of specialist interest. Candidates are encouraged to contact Dr Rob Hadden (Laboratory Director) to discuss their preferred options.
The Department of Cellular and Anatomical Pathology is the largest provider of Histopathological services in the Southwest Peninsula and is located within Derriford Hospital, integrating Histopathology, Neuropathology and Cytology laboratories, and a mortuary. The workload is diverse, commensurate with Derriford Hospital’s status as services except cervical cytology, paediatric pathology and bone pathology.
We have recently been granted funding from NHS England to implement digitisation of histopathology within the Peninsula, which once implemented will allow more flexible working. The Department is committed to the development of advanced practitioners to support the role of Consultant Histopathologists.
Derriford hospital is situated within easy reach of central Plymouth, Tavistock, Ivybridge and the Cornish towns of Saltash, via the Tamar Bridge, and Torpoint via car ferry. Bordered by the rugged beautiful Dartmoor to the North, fantastic beaches and the South West Coast path to the South, the South Hams to the East and Cornwall to the West, Plymouth is a vibrant waterfront city with a wealth of attractions and activities for everyone to enjoy. A city set amidst some of England’s most glorious countryside, where a rich maritime heritage meets the bustle of modern commerce, provides ample opportunities for outdoor sports and activities including some of the UK’s best sailing, scuba diving and hiking. Being both a University City and popular holiday destination means Plymouth is also a glittering city of entertainment and culture, with a bustling night life and nationally renown theatre, as well as being the home of Plymouth Argyle football club and Plymouth Albion RFC. The Plymouth Life Centre offers swimming, diving, indoor climbing and fitness facilities to the local population, and hosts a number of National competitive sporting competitions. Plymouth is also fortunate to be the home of the annual National fireworks Championships, which are held every August over 2 nights.
Direct Train links to the North and Midlands, London and Edinburgh are available, and an international ferry port gives easy access to Europe, with regular sailings to and from Roscoff and Santander. Newquay, Exeter and Bristol Airports are all within easy reach for domestic and international flights.
The post is advertised as a full-time post with a standard 10 PA contract, with no on-call service commitment. Any candidate who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will also be eligible to be considered for the post.
Applicants must hold the FRCPath (or equivalent qualification) and be on the GMC Specialist Register or be within 6 months of attainment of the Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at the time of interview.
