We have an exciting and unique opportunity for a General Practitioner to take up a post at the Medical Centre at British Army Training Unit Suffield (BATUS) in Alberta, Canada to work within Defence Primary Healthcare (DPHC).
The role of DPHC is to provide a safe, effective and efficient healthcare service for entitled personnel contributing to the maximisation of Service personnel fit for task. This is achieved through the provision of an occupationally-aware primary healthcare service which includes dental, rehabilitation and mental healthcare services.
The purpose of these roles is to provide primary and occupational healthcare, ensuring the provision of a comprehensive and professional service for entitled personnel (military, civilian, dependents and children). This will be done by providing a positive caring environment, in which patients can expect a high-quality professional service.
The primary duties of the posts include, but are not limited to:
- Providing general healthcare to all registered patients during normal practice hours.
- Undertaking mandatory medical examinations and provide appropriate occupational healthcare and advice, and all supporting administrative duties.
- Providing appropriate preventative medical advice to both individuals and Chain of Command.
- Providing primary care emergency treatment to any patient who may require this within the Establishment.
- Provide Pre-Hospital Emergency Care in locations where Host Nation provision is either inadequate or non-existent, in order to save life and ensure a patient gets to appropriate hospital care in a timely fashion.
Qualifications and Memberships
- Current GMC registration: on GP register and with a licence to practise.
- Doctors will provide Certificate of Prescribed Equivalent Experience or Statement of Acquired Rights (now known as CCT) from the Joint Committee in Post Graduate Training in General Practice (JCPGT(GP)).
- To hold this certificate they will also have to hold a Post Graduate Training Certificate in General Practice and a Certificate of General Practice Vocational Training (GPVT). Doctors need all above to be registered on GMC as GP.

Our chosen candidates and their dependents will be expected to have a medical and be deemed to be medically supportable in Canada.

Successful candidates must meet the security requirements before they can be appointed. The level of security needed is security check.
All employees joining the Ministry of Defence who are new to the Civil Service will be subject to a 6-month probation period (unless otherwise advised).
These posts attract Cost of Living Overseas Allowance (COLA), which is payable based on personal circumstances and marital status.
Out of Hours cover is a requirement of these posts and consists of a 1:3 - 1:2 to the entitled local population at risk. The Civilian GP's will form part of the Out of Hours Rota (allowance payable).
Whilst you will be a permanent member of the MOD, you will be subject to the normal overseas posting lengths and you will have an obligation to return to an MOD position in the UK after your overseas posting. This is not a Specially Recruited to Canada position. At the end of a tour no guarantees can be given that you will return to your previous or preferred location in the UK. This may mean the mobility obligation for mobile grades may be enacted where there is no suitable post at an individual’s preferred location.
