This is an excellent opportunity to experience working in the Highlands with a great team. Due to a recent vacancy, NHS Highland wishes to appoint a Consultant in Emergency Medicine to maintain the quality of the Service and the consultant rota. The post is offered on a part time basis of 6 Programmed Activities per week over the period.

There are currently 4 full time and 3 part time consultants (including this post) with all 7 consultants playing equal parts in the on-call (i.e.1:7). A business case is being put together to explore further consultant expansion to allow LTFT colleagues to opt for pro rata on call.

This post is based in Raigmore Hospital, which is the principal Emergency Department in the Highlands providing Accident and Emergency services and Out of Hours Primary Care Emergency Centre (OOH PCEC) to Inverness and the surrounding catchment area of around 120,000 people. The hospital is also the secondary receiving service and regional Trauma Unit for the Highland area covering over 10,000 square miles.

In 2004 a new £3.2m, 1000 sq metre, Emergency Department opened on the Raigmore Hospital site. The department has a 4-bedded resuscitation area with overhead gantry X-ray, 11 treatment and examination rooms, and a dedicated paediatric waiting area/treatment rooms, a dedicated seminar room and staff room. There is 24/7 access to CT.

The primary care ‘out-of-hours’ service is co-located with some integration of provision of medical care.
The department is a designated major accident and radiation incident centre and has dedicated decontamination facilities. Further information on NHS Highland and it facilities can be found at www.nhshighland.scot.nhs.uk
Informal enquiries may be made to Dr Andrew Rowlands, Service Lead for the Emergency Department on 01463 704358 or email a.rowlands@nhs.net.
