Applications are invited for a vacancy in the stand alone Intensive Care Medicine (ICM) Clinical Fellow post for 12 months.

The Intensive Care Unit at William Harvey Hospital is expanding, creating additional clinical fellow posts to help support the current medical workforce.

Thinking of taking time out from specialty training? Didn’t secure a training number for your chosen specialty? Want to develop some new skills and improve your CV? Then come and join our busy and dynamic intensive care unit and hone your skills in resuscitation, organ support and care of the critically unwell. At the same time, use the dedicated non-clinical time within the rota to develop your skills in one of three areas, depending on your training needs and interest; focused intensive care echocardiography (FICE), medical leadership or research.

The post is open to physicians, anaesthetists and emergency medicine doctors who wish to gain or consolidate their experience in intensive care medicine. The busy 13 bedded, intensive care unit (soon to be 16) is staffed by dedicated consultants and trainees and has an excellent reputation for teaching. It is one of a small number of units in the KSS region recognised for all level of ICM speciality training.

Within the department, there is scope to develop skills and knowledge within one of the following areas;

FICE: There are currently four FICE mentors in the department and a dedicated echocardiography machine for use to accrue the 50 cases required to become FICE accredited.

Medical leadership: Within the department are senior clinicians with significant leadership roles within the Trust. Time would be spent shadowing them during departmental, divisional and executive level meetings, In addition, a quality improvement project would be undertaken to consolidate lessons learnt during the shadowing process.

Research: There are currently 3 NIHR approved research trials recruiting or starting on the ICU. Fellows would be encouraged to help lead the recruitment and oversight of a trial under the supervision of the principle investigator.

The position is ideally suited for candidates who have completed their core training in parent specialities but highly motivated individuals below this level considering a career in acute medicine, anaesthetic or emergency medicine will also be actively considered for the position.
