Top End Mental Health Service – Darwin

Fixed vacancy for 5 years

Top End Mental Health Service is looking for a Senior Specialist Clinician to fill the position of Forensic Consultant Psychiatrist.

This is an opportunity for an enthusiastic Consultant to enjoy the rich and varied experiences of the NT and make a solid contribution to the Service. TEMHS has a range of multi- disciplinary teams delivering adult, child and adolescent, forensic, training, and education, remote and consultation liaison psychiatry services. These services are delivered on both an inpatient and outpatient basis.  It is anticipated that the position will provide exciting opportunities to deliver a forensic psychiatry service to provide for the needs of the NT population.

The Northern Territory has a very small population spread over an area larger than Western Europe, with a significant proportion of Aboriginal residents in remote communities. The tropical climate and remoteness of many communities makes for challenging medicine; Mental Health, with the second largest burden of disease, has unique opportunities to develop knowledge and experience in Psychiatry not readily found in major urban centres.

The Health Services in Central Australia and The Top End are undergoing an exciting period of change that might best be described as a “re-invention” to better meet the challenges of complex health care in the 21st Century, with clear vision and leadership that adds to the attractiveness of the NT as a place to work. Mental Health is one of the primary areas of attention in the first Strategic Plan and will offer opportunity for innovation particularly in the integration of primary mental health care and specialist mental health care into patient focused services.

The successful applicant will have current or be eligible for specialist registration with the Australian Health Practitioners Registration Agency, with not less than the equivalent of six years full-time service in medical practice as a staff specialist, and either a Fellow of the Australasian Chapter of Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists, or international qualification or equivalent to the above.
