Consultant in Medical Microbiology

Applications are invited for a consultant post for this 700 bed acute hospital serving a local population of approximately 400,000. This post is a substantive post. The appointment will be made in accordance with the terms and conditions of service for the 2003 consultant contract (England)
The appointee will be part of a team of two Consultants. The department provides an extensive repertoire of diagnostic tests in bacteriology, virology and mycology. Molecular diagnostic testing is employed in many diagnostic areas. We are patient focused with the primary objective of providing accurate and rapid results to assist clinical colleagues to make timely decisions. The successful candidate will be expected to lead the virology section of the department and along with the other consultant provide a comprehensive microbiology and infection treatment and management service.
The Hospital has always been renowned for its friendly atmosphere and good working relationships. Ongoing developments are now enabling a considerable expansion in facilities, staff and hence services offered. The Trust has University Hospital status with UCL.
The Hospital has easy access to central London and the rural Chilterns. The rural areas include many attractive villages and towns within easy reach of the Hospital including St Albans and Harpenden. Excellent schools are found nearby. There is also very good access to the Midlands and London by road using the M1 or A1, or by rail to one of Luton’s three stations. A direct link using the new ‘Busway’ takes passengers from Luton Train station just 7 minutes to reach a stop within a short walking distance of the hospital. London Luton Airport is within fifteen minute’s drive from the hospital.
Applicants are required to have FRCPath or equivalent, full GMC registration, and inclusion on the Specialist Register of the General Medical Council. Specialist Registrars may apply if within 6 months of obtaining CCT at the date of interview.
Residence is required within ten miles by road or up to thirty minutes travelling time of the hospital.
The appointment will be subject to an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check for the successful candidate prior to commencement.
Please note that all shortlisted candidates will be required to attend a pre-interview assessment process involving the completion of an on-line personality profiling assessment, followed by a 1-1 session, a written exercise and a group assessment event at the hospital. These will be scheduled prior to the interview date; all shortlisted candidates must attend these appointments.
