Consultant in Emergency Medicine

Based at the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, SE Wales

Full Time (10 Sessions)

 Anticipated Start Date: Immediate

Closing Date for Applications: Midnight on 19th September 2019

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board has recently completed a review of its clinical staffing model within its Emergency Departments and has secured Executive support to increase its body of Consultants to deliver the new clinical model. These posts aim to increase the Consultant presence in the Emergency Departments to provide a senior decision maker led model of care, whilst also expanding consultant numbers as part of the longer term strategy of the Health Board of a single sited Emergency Department at the new specialist critical care hospital under construction – The Grange University Hospital. This post will be principally based at the Royal Gwent hospital, Newport. However with the move towards a single site ED there is likely to be increased cross site working, and some sessions may be delivered at Nevill Hall Hospital, Abergavenny.

This post have been designed to enhance the Consultant presence in the Department and could have a particular focus on Paediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) or Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine (PHEM). The focus of PEM is to drive the service forward as we look to centralise the care of acutely unwell children onto one hospital site in the near future. The successful candidate must possess excellent background knowledge in Emergency Medicine and an appropriate higher qualification (e.g. FRCEM). The candidate could also be dual accredited in PEM/PHEM as a desirable characteristic for this post.

The Health Board actively supports consultant doctors to undertake funded 3 month formal sabbaticals through an annual application process.

Free parking is available across all Aneurin Bevan University Health Board Sites.

This position involves Regulated Activity with children and adults as defined by the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act (amended by the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012) and the following checks will be undertaken following any conditional offer:

Enhanced check with barred list information, including an adults and children’s barred list check

Applicants must hold full registration and a licence to practice with the GMC.

Candidates for Consultant posts must also be on the GMC Specialist Register (including via CESR/European Community Rights) or will have a CCT/CESR(CP) date within 6 months of interview.

This post is not included on the current UK Shortage Occupation List and is subject to the rules outlined in the attachment ‘Resident Labour Market Test Guidance’.
