Full Time (10 Sessions) Plus 2 Additional Temporary Sessions

Based at the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, SE Wales

We require an Emergency Eye Care Ophthalmologist with a special interest in Cornea to support the ophthalmology service within our Health Board. This role will complement the other speciality interests in the Directorate (Cornea, Oculoplastic, Paediatrics, Glaucoma and Retina).  The successful post holder will have Emergency Eye Clinic, General and Cornea elements to their job plan.

The Ophthalmology Department is based at the Royal Gwent Hospital where we have a purpose built ophthalmology unit with outpatient, ward, theatre and day case facilities. Day case surgery and outpatient clinics are also held at Nevill Hall Hospital.  Outreach outpatient clinics are also held at Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr Hospital and other sites within Gwent.  In addition the service has Glaucoma Ophthalmic Diagnostic and Treatment Centres, to provide assessment and diagnosis for Glaucoma and OHT in a community setting to improve access to ophthalmology services.  We also have a community sited Wet AMD Diagnostic and Treatment Centre.

The Aneurin Bevan University Health Board supports modernisation and the continued development of the ophthalmology service.   Improving and developing the service is key to the provision of a quality service for our patients.  We work closely with our Primary Care colleagues in order to achieve these benefits.

The Health Board actively supports consultant doctors to undertake funded 3 month formal sabbaticals through an annual application process.

Applicants must hold full registration and a licence to practice with the GMC.Candidates for Consultant posts must also be on the GMC Specialist Register (including via CESR/European Community Rights) or will have a CCT/CESR(CP) date within 6 months of interview.
