Applications are sought for a Consultant in Vascular Surgery at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust. This is a replacement post to maintain the current team of 6 full time Consultants. The post will be based at Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital.

Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital is designated as a specialist arterial centre in the Lancashire and Cumbria Regional Vascular Network.

The post offers an exciting opportunity to support the expanding and developing vascular services offered by a busy department with a strong record in teaching and training. This is an excellent opportunity to join a friendly and cohesive team of 6 consultant vascular surgeons and 6 consultant radiologists, serving a combined population of just over 540,000 working across two main sites which together comprise the East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust.

The Trust consists of the local districts of Blackburn with Darwen, Hyndburn, Ribble Valley, Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale. Acute hospital services are provided from the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital and Burnley General Teaching Hospital, together with Pendle Community Hospital. The two main hospitals are both state of the art PFI developments which opened in 2006.

The Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital was a £120 million development, providing a 45,000 sq m newly built extension, together with 7,500 sq. m of refurbishment work to existing wards and departments. This development replaced the Blackburn Royal Infirmary and created a new interventional suite for cardiology, radiology and interventional vascular angiology .There is a helicopter pad allowing 24 hour access and ease/ proximity to the motorway.

Burnley is the site of the recently commissioned elective surgery centre. This provides both day case operating theatre sessions as well as a well-equipped treatment room for local anaesthetic varicose vein surgery. East Lancashire Women and Newborn Centre with an in-patient Obstetric Unit is also located at Burnley, with a midwife led birthing unit. The Trust has close links with a number of Tertiary Centres in Lancashire, Manchester and Liverpool.

East Lancashire is well served by an extensive motorway network and is within easy reach of the major conurbations of Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds. The Ribble Valley is an area of outstanding beauty and is only a stone’s throw away from the Forest of Bowland, Yorkshire Dales, and Pennines. North Wales and the Lake District are also within easy reach. There is an abundance of good local schools and quality housing at reasonable prices.

The appointment is on a whole-time basis but applications are welcome from those who wish to job share.

Any person who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis, in consultation with consultant colleagues. Suitably qualified job-share candidates will receive serious consideration.
