Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist - Hayworth Ward Lewisham Hospital - (10 PA's - Permanent)

Ref: 334-PMOA-1803049-JA-A

An opportunity has arisen to appoint a new consultant to a very well established inpatient consultant post due to the current post holder leaving the Trust. The post is to be combined with a day a week in the Lewisham care home intervention team, which provides input into local care homes to advise on managing behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia. The post is 8 sessions on Hayworth ward and 2 sessions in the care home intervention team.

Hayworth ward is an 18 bedded acute inpatient unit for older adults, mainly with functional mental illness, although some patients may also have dementia. The post is well supported by an established multidisciplinary team and junior medical staff. It is an innovative ward and an exciting place to work, with consistently high standards. There is a full establishment of staff. There are excellent working links with the home team treatment who can facilitate discharges and the community mental health teams who remain involved and help with discharge planning. There are also well established links with the geriatricians at Lewisham hospital and a highly responsive older adult psychiatric liaison service.

The care home intervention team is predominantly nurse and psychology led, but the 2 consultant session a week provide medical advice and liaison where required. This is a relatively new model of care to help promote patient centred care planning and a holistic approach as an alternative to unnecessary antipsychotic prescribing in care home residents. This model started in Lewisham , has bene very successful and has now been rolled out to the other boroughs. It is an experienced team who largely work independently but require some limited consultant input. This part of the job will take you into the community and compliment the ward part of your job.

Joining SLAM you will be part of a pioneering Trust at the centre of leading developments in psychiatric services, education and research
