We are currently looking for a Specialty Doctor in Urology at Kent and Canterbury Hospital to support our Consultant teams in our forward looking progressive department. Applicants must have completed at least 4 years postgraduate training, at least two of which will be in a relevant training programme. This post commences as soon as possible and will be offered either as a fixed term position for 12 months or a permanent position. There are training opportunities within the post to develop either general or sub-specialty skills in urology.

The urology department consists of seven consultants, supported by an Associate specialist, staff grades with 2 specialist registrars. Further junior staff consists of Core Training and Foundation doctors. The department is innovative with a DaVinci Robot, and extensive laparoscopic surgery. There is a large stone work-load with an on-site lithotripter. Urology services are centred at Canterbury with outpatient and diagnostic services at peripheral sites. We are a cancer centre and adhere to guidelines regarding rapid access diagnostic services. We have a dedicated urological surgery ward.

The urology department provides comprehensive urology services from Canterbury, together with out-patient and diagnostic services at peripheral sites, and is part of the Surgical Services Division delivering Vascular Surgery, Urology and Interventional Radiology.

In March 2018  the Government and Health Education England announced that a joint bid by Canterbury Christ Church University and the University of Kent to establish a medical school was successful.

The medical school opens its doors in  September 2020, offering 100 undergraduate medical places on a yearly basis. The five year programme will be taught at the Canterbury campuses of both universities with medical placements within Primary, Community and Secondary Care across Kent and Medway.

The Kent & Medway Medical School (KMMS) will be Kent and Medway’s  first ever medical school, bringing together the existing centres of excellence in health and medical education provided by the two universities, and local healthcare organisations such as East Kent Hospitals University Foundation Trust. It will offer a new model of patient-focused medical education.

The KMMS will also play a key part of the solution to the challenges of recruiting and retaining medical professionals for this region.  You will have the chance to be there at the start of what is expected to be an exciting and productive relationship and help to shape the Drs of the future.

East Kent offers good housing and schools, fine surrounding countryside and coastal environs and is within easy reach of London, the Channel Tunnel and airports. The upgraded rail link to London via Ashford opened in 2008, and takes 35 minutes to St Pancras station.
