This 800 bed hospital at the Southmead site offers some patients single rooms with en-suite facilities, greatly improving privacy and dignity and helping to control the spread of infections.

Applications are invited for a consultant neurosurgeon at the north Bristol NHS trust, supporting the development and increased demand on spinal services. The post will be a full time, 10 PA contract contributing to the 12 consultant neurosurgeon on call rota. In addition there will be participation in a second tier complex spine rota that is shared between the present complex spine neurosurgeons and six orthopaedic spine surgeons, five of whom also provide cover to Bristol Children’s Hospital. The post holder for this neurosurgical consultant spine surgeon will not have any paediatric responsibilities. The elective practice will focus on spinal neurosurgery.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the spinal surgery MDT on a weekly basis.

Qualifications for the post will include the neurosurgical fellowship and / or the European equivalent. The successful candidate will need to have the necessary experience of complex spinal surgery to manage emergency spinal conditions as well as emergency cranial neurosurgical competency to contribute to the activity of the Major Trauma Centre. In addition experience in minimally invasive and computer navigated spinal surgical techniques is expected along with microsurgical skills necessary for intradural neurosurgical practice.
