Applications are invited for this new post at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals Trust.
This is an exciting time to join the department which has ISO 15189 and HTA accreditation, is introducing voice recognition and extended BMS role in specimen dissection.
In 2017 the department had a workload of over 36,000 histology and approx. 5,000 diagnostic cytology requests. The current consultant team consists of 8 consultants and one locum consultant. The Royal College of Pathologists guidelines for staffing and workload are being implemented for workload management within the department among consultant histopathologists. The departmental staffing comprises 1 head BMS, 27.68 BMSs and MLAs and 5.73 APTs.
The diagnostic work includes a high proportion of specimens from the breast, skin, urology, and gastrointestinal tract together with gynaecological, pulmonary and head & neck specimens. There is no requirement to report gynaecological cytology specimens.
Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust comprises three hospitals located in Worcester, Redditch and Kidderminster serving a population of 560,000. The Trust provides the majority of hospital specialities for the population of Worcestershire, including breast, urology, colorectal, head and neck, gynaecology and orthopaedics. It is a breast and colorectal cancer screening unit. A new and modern oncology treatment centre opened in spring 2015.
The successful candidate will participate in the provision of a general histopathology and diagnostic cytopathology service. The department operates a lead pathologist model for cancer MDT meetings without any subspecialisation; however, personal interests can be accommodated. There is the opportunity to participate in consultant led FNAC, Mohs surgery and coronial post mortems.
Applicants must hold full and specialist GMC registration with a Licence to Practice and have entry on Specialist Register in Histopathology (or CCT expected within 6 months of interview date). Applicants must also hold the FRCPath (or show evidence of equivalency). Flexible working patterns can be accommodated.
Worcestershire is a beautiful largely rural county, lying between the Cotswolds, Welsh Borders and Birmingham, close to the major motorway networks of the M42, M5 and M6, with a thriving hub and stunning recreational facilities, an expanse of new housing developments and top rated schools. There are four main towns, Bromsgrove, Kidderminster, Redditch and Worcester and four further substantial market towns of Malvern, Pershore, Evesham and Droitwich Spa.
