Applications are invited for a whole time Consultant ENT surgeon (with an interest in lateral skull base and cochlear implants) at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. The post holder will also undertake management of routine chronic middle ear pathology

The post is offered initially as a 10 PA contract with a 1 in 7 (1 in 9 weekend) ENT on call commitment. Further PAs could be negotiated and for suitably qualified candidates, an approach will be made to the University of Nottingham for the conferment of an honorary academic title.

The post is available to start from June 2019. Subject to negotiation it is likely that a suitable candidate currently undertaking the above fellowship would be encouraged to complete their advanced training before taking up the position. Applicants should be on the Specialist Register and have completed or be undertaking a lateral skull base/implant fellowship.

Although this is a replacement post, there will be an overlap period between the outgoing and incoming lateral skull base surgeon to provide mentorship and support. There are five Otologists at NUH. There is wide exposure to surgery for CSOM and reconstructive otology (ossiculoplasty and stapedectomy). There is an active BAHA programme. The Cochlear Implant Programme covers both Paediatric cases, with routine bilateral implantation at under 12 months of age, and adults. This year we anticipate performing over 100 implants. There are separate Cochlear Implant MDA clinics as well as weekly Skull Base MDT meetings. The post would allow for exposure to Lateral Skull Base Surgery including vestibular schwanommas. Audiology services are provided within the ENT department and also at Ropewalk House in the centre of Nottingham. This has recently been granted UKAS accreditation for all parts of the service.

Our ENT department provides a comprehensive range of ORL-HNS services, and is organised on a sub specialty basis. The department is situated in a purpose built PFI building and is shared with Ophthalmology. There is a 34 bedded inpatient/day case ward for adults, shared with Maxillofacial Surgery and Ophthalmology and a 22 bedded paediatric surgical specialty ward. There are 3 ENT operating theatres with a wide range of equipment including new microscopes, navigation as well as new otology drills being procured. In addition, there over £600K worth of new state-of-the-art videoendoscopic equipment to equip our outpatient consulting rooms.

As a teaching trust we have a strong relationship with our colleagues at the University of Nottingham. In partnership with the University of Nottingham, NUH operates two NIHR Biomedical Research Units - in Hearing & Deafness and Digestive Diseases. Academic interests will be strongly encouraged and supported.

Closing date: 8th August 2019.
