Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Critical Care Medicine at Aintree University Hospital in Liverpool starting date TBC.

Aintree Hospital is a 750-bed teaching hospital in north Liverpool. It is the receiving site for Major Trauma in Cheshire and Merseyside and is the tertiary referral centre for Head and Neck surgery, Hepatobiliary surgery and Rheumatology.

There are proposals for merger with the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust, with an expectation of merger late in 2019. This would create one of the largest teaching hospital trusts in the country.  The combined Critical Care Department would comprise approximately 60 Critical Care beds.

The Critical Care Unit at Aintree University Hospital is a busy, 23 bedded, general adult critical care unit which admits approximately 1,400 patients per year, including elective post-operative complex major surgery patients as well as emergency medical and surgical patients.

The Critical Care department is staffed by 13 Consultant Intensivists providing 24/7 cover of the Critical Care Unit

Suitable candidates will have a major interest in and commitment to Critical Care Medicine. They will have a desire to work in a large Critical Care department in a large and expanding teaching hospital department.  They will have an interest in the management of critically ill major trauma patients.

The posts are full-time appointments in Intensive Care Medicine, however it is usually possible to arrange up to 2.5 PA of activity in another sub-specialty, depending on requirements.

The Unit is recognised for training by the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine for all levels of training. Both intermediate and advanced ICM trainees rotate through the department.

Applicants must have full GMC registration and hold Fellowship of the faculty of Intensive Care medicine (FFICM) or equivalent. They should posses a CCT in Intensive Care Medicine and must be either listed on the Specialist Register for Intensive Care Medicine or within 6 months of eligibility. They must have at least 1 year of experience working in Intensive Care Medicine in the NHS.  Where there is a desire to pursue a minority interest in another subspecialty, applicants must also meet the equivalent standards for membership, CCT and Specialist Register eligibility in this area. Substantive appointments must have experience of practice of Critical Care and any relevant subspecialty in the UK.

Liverpool is an exciting and vibrant area to live in, with significant development in the city following the success of the European Year of Culture. The city has an international reputation for arts and sports, while giving easy access to countryside and excellent recreational activities.
