Community Consultant in Paediatrics
Wrightington Wigan and Leigh Foundation Trust caters for a population of 310,000. There is an Integrated Children’s Service with combined Hospital and Community services within our Child Health Directorate.
We are looking to appoint a substantive Community Consultant Paediatrician.
This is an opportunity to join the enthusiastic and friendly paediatric department in Wigan. There are close links between the community and acute paediatric services with some colleagues doing hybrid roles across both services. The post is advertised as standard 10PA generic posts but there will be opportunities for candidates to either substitute clinical activities with leadership positions (e.g. Joint agency response to sudden deaths in childhood:SUDC doctor role) or take those on as extra PAs. There are no acute paediatric or on-call commitments with these posts.
The locality community paediatric workload will involve the assessment and management of children with neurodevelopmental difficulties. Experience in the management of ADHD, ASD, Learning difficulties and associated comorbidities is necessary. There are close working relationships with colleagues in community services, 5BP mental health trust, education and social care.
Experience in safeguarding children is essential and it is expected the candidate will be confident in performing child protection medicals and working closely with multi-agency partners. The appointee will be fully supported in this role by the named and designated doctors. There is weekly safeguarding peer review allowing timely discussions of cases along with mentoring and support.
The appointee will see patients in a variety of outpatients settings e.g. on the Thomas Linacre, Leigh Infirmary, Platt Bridge community sites and Claire House. There may also be the opportunity to do special school clinics. There are visiting clinics in cardiology, rheumatology, neurology, nephrology and urology by specialists from the tertiary children’s hospitals in the region.
Paediatric surgical facilities are on the RAEI site as is the Accident and Emergency Department for the Wigan and Leigh district. This has been redeveloped and includes a self-contained Paediatric Emergency care centre. All acute children’s admissions are seen here. There is an assessment area with 8 cubicles.
The Child Health Directorate sits within the Surgical Division and the directorate covers all areas of Paediatric and Child Health services in both Acute and Community settings. Close relationships at management level are in place between the Acute, community and mental health providers to promote integrated child health services across both hospital and community sectors.
You must be fully registered with the GMC and hold a license to practice and be on the Specialist Register, or be within 6 months of attaining your CCT or equivalent at the interview stage.
