Canterbury Health Laboratories (CHL) is part of the Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) and is the leading medical diagnostic reference laboratory in New Zealand with national and global links and collaborative partners.
Operating from well-equipped facilities opposite Christchurch Hospital, CHL provides the environment for a comprehensive laboratory and tertiary referral centre. CHL has an extensive history of research study collaborations and is leading New Zealand in adopting novel technologies. CHL provides tertiary laboratory services for CDHB's hospitals, selected laboratory services to general practice, and performs reference tests for all medical diagnostic laboratories within New Zealand.
The Microbiology service provides specialist testing, information and result interpretation related to infectious disease diagnostics and surveillance and assists with managing communicable disease outbreaks. The department has close links with hospital and community based medical specialties, in particular Infectious Diseases, Sexual Health and Infection Prevention and Control. CHL also has a fully operational PC3 (Physical Containment level 3) facility.
Microbiology at CHL has the Ministry of Health contract as the National Measles and Rubella Reference Laboratory and through this has strong links with the World Health Organisation.
Applications are invited from Consultant Microbiologists for appointment to this full time position as a Senior Medical Officer. Registration with the New Zealand Medical Council and fellowship with the RCPA (Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia) are a pre-requisite. As a member of the pathologist team you will help shape the strategic direction of the Microbiology laboratory service, ensuring that patients and referrers are provided with a world leading service. You will work closely with the experienced scientific staff to ensure appropriate use of the laboratory resource.
The Microbiology Department at Canterbury Health Laboratories, Canterbury DHB, currently employs four Consultants and two Registrars (in training positions), and provides an extensive, state of the art service. The department has a strong academic link with the University of Otago, and the opportunity exists for a senior clinical lecturer appointment with the main focus on teaching medical students. There will be an opportunity to engage in approved research initiatives. The Consultant Microbiologist is also expected to provide clinical input into a number of the smaller medical laboratories throughout NZ.
Specialist areas in microbiology include bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, virology, serology, and infection control. Molecular methods form a large part of the diagnostic strategy CHL employs. These integrated services are provided by experienced and highly qualified staff.
