Applications are invited for a Specialty Doctor in General Surgery at the Wye Valley NHS Trust. This is a permanent post.

The Department of Surgery is a busy general surgery department, which includes the sub-specialties of breast, colorectal, upper GI & urology.

The general surgical service is based at the County Hospital, Hereford, with some clinical sessions available for training at affiliated community hospitals. This post encompasses the management of all general surgical conditions, as well as investigation and co-ordination of management of upper GI malignancies.

The MDTs comprise of Clinical Nurse Specialists, 4 gastroenterologists, GI Radiologists, Histopathologists and Oncologists. The successful candidate will be expected to work as part of the multidisciplinary team providing the most up to date care for local patients. The Trust provides surgical care to patients with colorectal cancer but upper GI cancers are referred to Gloucester for OG surgery and Birmingham for HPB malignancies. The Trust provides the full range of investigations for both benign and malignant upper GI conditions and lower GI malignancy and offers interventional radiology.

The successful applicant should have established skills in emergency general surgery but support and training will be offered in a range of areas to suit the candidate. Training can be offered in upper and lower GI endoscopy, advanced laparoscopic surgery for benign upper GI disease and malignant lower GI disease. The successful candidate will be fully supported in obtaining study leave and if necessary clinical training in areas not offered within the organisation. The successful candidate will be given an educational supervisor who will work with the educational structures within the organisation to ensure appropriate and adequate training.

The department of surgery has 8 full-time registrar level doctors (including 3 Specialist Trainees), 10 FY1 doctors who rotate between the surgical sub-specialties.

The successful candidate will be supported and encouraged to undertake teaching and training of the trainees, FY1 doctors and PAM where appropriate.

The successful applicant should possess MRCS/FRCS (or equivalent) and be registered with the GMC or eligible for registration.
