Ref: 334-LEW-1707276-JA-B (substantive - 10 PAs)
South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) has an exciting opportunity and is looking to recruit a dynamic and driven substantive Consultant Psychiatrist to the well-established Johnson Psychiatric Intensive care unit (PICU), for the London Borough of Lewisham. This is a male PICU based at the Ladywell Unit, University Hospital Lewisham.
The opportunity has arisen due to impending retirement of the current Consultant who has been in post for many years.
This is an excellent time to join us, as our trust has recently undergone reconfiguration around the operational management of adult mental health services to a borough based, localised structure. Whilst services are financially managed within local boroughs, the Clinical Academic Groups (CAGs) remain in place in this new reconfiguration as part of a new central Quality Centre, leading to design care pathways in line with the evidence base. Each Operations Directorate has a new management team structure with standardised roles across all the teams. Each structure will be led by a service director and a clinical director supported by a senior management team.
Johnson Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a 10-bedded male unit (i.e. a male PICU) based at the Ladywell Unit in Lewisham.
There are four other acute in-patient wards in the Ladywell unit as follows:
- Clare ward (male)- 17 beds
- Powell ward (male) – 18 beds
- Wharton ward (female) -18 beds
- Virginia Woolf ward (female) – 16 beds
The PICU is for male service users who are over 18 with a primary diagnosis of psychosis, many of whom have co-morbid conditions (e.g. substance use, personality disorder, physical health disorders) with significant impairment of functioning.
The PICU aims to provide intensive inpatient care underpinned by the principles of acute and dynamic clinically focused risk management. The goal is one of therapeutic containment and clinical progression within a recovery framework. Average Length of stay is about 30 days.
The current post is 1.0 Whole time equivalent (WTE) and the vacancy has arisen due to the previous consultant’s impending retirement. You will be based at Johnson PICU and will be expected to work closely with your team leader and MDT staff in the day-to-day management of all patients admitted to the unit.
The post holder will be supported by one part time Specialty doctor and a core trainee linked to the unit, of whom the post holder would be clinical supervisor.
The ward brings together different professionals, including psychiatrists, nurses and social workers who work with the patient and their carers, to maintain their health and move on to live more independently in their communities.
For further details about the team and its function please refer to the detailed Job description.
The trust is a part of King’s Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre (AHSC). KHP is responsible for seeing 2 million patients each year, has 25,000 employees and 19,500 students, and a £2 billion annual turnover. It brings together the best of basic and translational research, clinical excellence and world-class teaching to deliver ground-breaking advances in physical and mental healthcare. There are excellent opportunities for teaching, training, supervising and mentoring medical students and trainee doctors, participating in audit and quality improvement projects and getting involved in research. You will work very closely with your fellow consultants and be encouraged to participate in and be a part of the famous Maudsley Grand rounds and be an active member of the Lewisham MAC (Medical Advisory committee) where you will have the opportunity to regularly network with and seek support from your consultant colleagues.
It is a condition of your employment that you are, and remain a fully registered medical practitioner and are included on the Specialist Register for General Adult Psychiatry held by the General Medical Council (GMC), or are eligible for inclusion into the register within six months of your appointment and continue to hold a licence to practice. You will be approved under Section 12 (2) of the Mental Health Act 1983 and be an Approved Clinician or able to achieve this within 3 months of your appointment.
The salary range for this post is in accordance with the NHS consultant salary scale (whole time), plus London Weighting (whole time).
