South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) has an exciting opportunity and is looking to recruit a dynamic and driven substantive Consultant Psychiatrist to the well-established Lewisham Home treatment and Crisis resolution team (LHTT). This is a nationally accredited service (HTAS accreditation by RCPsych), based at Ladywell house, 330 Lewisham High street, Lewisham.

This is an excellent time to join us, as our trust has recently undergone reconfiguration around the operational management of adult mental health services to a borough based, localised structure. Whilst services are financially managed within local boroughs, the Clinical Academic Groups (CAGs) remain in place in this new reconfiguration as part of a new central Quality Centre, leading to design care pathways in line with the evidence base. Each Operations Directorate has a new management team structure with standardised roles across all the teams. Each structure will be led by a service director and a clinical director supported by a senior management team.

The team bears fidelity to the Core model for HTT and is deemed to be the least restrictive alternative to an in-patient admission.

The team provides a service to patients aged 18-65 years, living within Lewisham (permanent or temporary) who are suffering from a severe mental illness or are in crisis to the extent that without additional input, they would be deemed to require in patient admission. HTT’s are expected to provide short term input (lasting an average of 2 to 6 weeks) and carry an average case load of 36 patients although this is variable and would be dependent on a number of other factors as detailed in the HTT Operational policy and zoning document.

In general, LHTT have an average case load of 26 to 30 patients and a LOS of about 21 days.

Key functions of the team:

  1. Assessment and gate keeping
  2. Providing evidence based interventions
  3. Facilitating early discharge from acute wards via the newly set up FEDS service

The current post is a Lead consultant role and is 0.8 Whole time equivalent (WTE). The vacancy has arisen due to the previous consultant’s internal re location.

There is also another 0.6 PA consultant in post who has a senior Management role as Medical lead for the borough. You will therefore be expected to be the Lead consultant for the service overall and the other consultant will play a supporting role and will mainly lead the FEDS service.

You will be based at Ladywell House in Lewisham which is within three minutes walking distance from University Hospital Lewisham where the in-patient wards and outpatient clinic is based.

You will be supported by a Higher trainee (who is shared with Virginia Woolf ward) and a specialty doctor. The MDT is made up of highly skilled staff including a Clinical service lead who is shared with Liaison and Crisis services (Aidan Collins), a Psychologist (Dr Christopher Whitely, Trust Deputy Head of Psychology), numerous Band 7 advanced practitioners, Band 6 and Band 5 staff and highly skilled support workers. Staff come from different backgrounds including nursing, OT and social work.

There are 4 acute in-patient wards (2 male and 2 female) plus a Male PICU, all located at the Ladywell Unit site in Lewisham. There are also an array of community mental health and other specialist teams in the Borough plus a well-established Lewisham Liaison service.

For further details about the team and its function please refer to the detailed Job description.

The trust is a part of King’s Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre (AHSC). KHP is responsible for seeing 2 million patients each year, has 25,000 employees and 19,500 students, and a £2 billion annual turnover. It brings together the best of basic and translational research, clinical excellence and world-class teaching to deliver ground-breaking advances in physical and mental healthcare. There are excellent opportunities for teaching, training, supervising and mentoring medical students and trainee doctors, participating in audit and quality improvement projects and getting involved in research. You will work very closely with your fellow consultants and be encouraged to participate in and be a part of the famous Maudsley Grand rounds and be an active member of the Lewisham MAC (Medical Advisory committee) where you will have the opportunity to regularly network with and seek support from your consultant colleagues.

It is a condition of your employment that you are, and remain a fully registered medical practitioner and are included on the Specialist Register for General Adult Psychiatry held by the General Medical Council (GMC), or are eligible for inclusion into the register within six months of your appointment and continue to hold a licence to practice. You will be approved under Section 12 (2) of the Mental Health Act 1983 and be an Approved Clinician or able to achieve this within 3 months of your appointment.

The salary range for this post is in accordance with the NHS consultant salary scale (whole time), plus London Weighting (whole time).
