Consultant Oncologist (GI)
Current NHS Consultant Terms and Conditions
The Department of Oncology wishes to appoint a replacement Consultant in GI oncology. The successful applicant will bring the current consultant workforce to twenty-one, including 15 clinical oncologists and 6 medical oncologists. The post is predominantly based in the Cancer Centre at the James Cook University, Middlesbrough with the option of a peripheral clinic in Darlington or Northallerton. The post would focus on either colorectal or upper GI cancer with flexibility to accommodate either a medical or a clinical oncologist.
The Teesside and North Yorkshire area has seen significant investment into oncology services alongside an expansion of consultant numbers. The £35M oncology Endeavour unit at JCUH was opened in April 2012 and the Robert Ogden Cancer centre in Northallerton in 2018. The department boasts an expanded chemotherapy unit designed to meet the increasing demand for systemic treatment and state of the art radiotherapy facilities. There are also dedicated out-patient departments and offices. The department has used the Chemocare electronic prescribing system for a number of years and has encouraged and established nurse-led and pharmacy-led chemotherapy clinics.
The department has a history of both developing and delivering innovative radiotherapy having had a lung SABR programme in place for many years. Recognition of this technical expertise by Elekta, the linac manufacturer, has seen the department become their International reference site. Further collaborative ventures with Elekta have included pilot work on VMAT and cone beam CT delivery and participation in the FFF implementation consortium.
There is a trials unit located within the department and recruitment into clinical trials is increasing. The department also has its own substantial local research fund and is keen to support personal research projects. We hope to appoint individuals with the drive to expand our research portfolio and establish links with local universities.
The Cancer Centre based at the James Cook University Hospital serves a population of just over a million and benefits from being at the heart of one of the largest acute trusts in the country. All major services are present on the one site giving the department excellent support in all aspects of medicine, surgery and diagnostic services.
