South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) has an exciting opportunity and is looking to recruit a substantive Consultant Psychiatrist as Lead consultant for the well-established Southwark Early Intervention team (STEP). The post has become available as the current post holder is retiring in April 2019.

This is an excellent time to join us, as our trust has recently undergone reconfiguration around the operational management of adult mental health services to a borough based, localised structure. Whilst services are financially managed within local boroughs, the Clinical Academic Groups (CAGs) remain in place in this new reconfiguration as part of a new central Quality Centre, leading to design care pathways in line with the evidence base. Each Operations Directorate has a new management team structure with standardised roles across all the teams. Each structure will be led by a service director and a clinical director supported by a senior management team.

The post is available within the STEP team who are based at Kennington Lane in Southwark. STEP function as an assertive outreach, community-based service. The service offers treatment for patients that are experiencing their first symptoms of psychosis. The team is an innovative multidisciplinary community team, which has been operational since the year 2000 as part of a National service framework. The service is part of the mainstream clinical general adult psychiatry services in Southwark and receives referrals of cases of early onset psychosis for the whole of the Borough.

The multidisciplinary team consists of 1.0 WTE Consultant Psychiatrists, a Core Psychiatric and Specialist Registrar trainees as well as nursing, psychology, occupational therapy staff and social workers. Administrative staff support the team. There is also a CSL and team manager who form a part of the core leadership group for the team. There are on-going discussions with the CCG to support additional staffing to the team. The post holder will be the lead consultant for the service and will work full time (10 PA’s).

For further details about the team and its function please refer to the detailed Job description.

The trust is a part of King’s Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre (AHSC). KHP is responsible for seeing 2 million patients each year, has 25,000 employees and 19,500 students, and a £2 billion annual turnover. It brings together the best of basic and translational research, clinical excellence and world-class teaching to deliver ground-breaking advances in physical and mental healthcare. There are excellent opportunities for teaching, training, supervising and mentoring medical students and trainee doctors, participating in audit and quality improvement projects and getting involved in research. You will work very closely with your fellow consultants and be encouraged to participate in and be a part of the famous Maudsley Grand rounds and be an active member of the Southwark MAC (Medical Advisory committee) where you will have the opportunity to regularly network with and seek support from your consultant colleagues.

It is a condition of your employment that you are, and remain a fully registered medical practitioner and are included on the Specialist Register for General Adult Psychiatry held by the General Medical Council (GMC), or are eligible for inclusion into the register within six months of your appointment and continue to hold a licence to practice. You will be approved under Section 12 (2) of the Mental Health Act 1983 and be an Approved Clinician or able to achieve this within 3 months of your appointment.

The salary range for this post is in accordance with the NHS consultant salary scale (whole time), plus London Weighting (whole time).
