About the position:
You will work in partnership with the General Manager of the service in the safe delivery of a clinical laboratory service. You’ll primarily be responsible for providing professional leadership for the senior and junior medical workforce, fostering excellence in practice standards, performance and professional conduct. You’ll also have opportunity to participate in the development of a long-term planning strategy to for services, including an integrated pathology and laboratory network for the Northern DHB region.
There are strong linkages with the University of Auckland (Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences) through the Auckland Academic Health Alliance and you’ll have an opportunity to develop and lead our research strategy and participate in clinical and/or basic science research and clinical teaching.
Our Pathology and Laboratory Medicine department provides tertiary and quarternary laboratory services to the greater Auckland and Northland Region and is the major referral laboratory for specialized laboratory tests in New Zealand. Test referrals originate from hospitals, community laboratories and research units located throughout New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. We offer an extensive analytical pathology service in Chemical Pathology, Haematology, Microbiology, Virology and Immunology, National Testing Centre for Newborn Screening, Forensic Pathology, Anatomical Pathology and Diagnostic Genetics. We hold a number of contracts for the reference pathology testing for all of New Zealand. Auckland City Hospital is New Zealand’s largest public hospital as well as the largest clinical research facility. There are approximately one million patient contacts each year, including hospital and outpatient services.
Auckland DHB employs over 11,000 health and medical staff which equates to nearly 9,200 full-time equivalent positions and manages a budget of approximately $2.1 billion. Auckland DHB is the largest trainer of doctors in New Zealand, with approximately 1,800 medical staff. LabPLUS is the largest provider of pathology specialist training in New Zealand.
The role requires an individual with demonstrated leadership skills, a demonstrated commitment to quality, safety and clinical governance, excellent communication skills and collaborative ability and a commitment to Auckland DHB strategic values.
Our ideal candidate will hold a medical qualification registerable or accredited in New Zealand and will have a higher qualification in pathology equivalent to the Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (FRCPA) and will have/be eligible for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
