Consultant in Neonatal Medicine
Southmead Hospital, Bristol
Full-Time - 10PAs
We are looking for an enthusiastic and dynamic neonatal consultant to join our Regional Tertiary Neonatal Unit. This is a replacement post. You will be joining a team of 11 consultants providing clinically excellent care to all babies across the South Western Operational Delivery Network. We are looking for an individual who would be able to take up this post from October 2019 or as soon as possible after then.
The Regional Neonatal Unit at Southmead is a Tertiary centre with excellent clinical outcomes and is recognised for its particular work within the field of neonatal neurology and neurosurgery. We work closely with our neighbouring unit at St. Michael’s Hospital as joint lead centre for the northern half of the newly assigned South West Neonatal Network. We have 34 neonatal cots of which 16 are designated intensive/high dependency. We provide a service for North Bristol Trust maternity, obstetric and fetal medicine departments, as well as accepting extremely preterm and sick babies from local level 2 centres. In 2018 we admitted 625 babies and undertook 4938 days of intensive and high-dependency care. We sit amongst the units with the lowest perinatal mortality rates in the UK (MBRRACE 2015 and 2016). The unit is closely associated with the University of Bristol, providing teaching for undergraduate medical students, and a strong focus for research. We provide excellent training for medical graduates, including neonatal ‘grid’ trainees. The unit participates in international bench-marking and quality improvement work with the Vermont Oxford Network. We work with a motivated team of ANNPs, neonatal nurses, nursery nurses and community liaison nurses to provide a holistic and family-centred service. The post will attract 10 PAs and will work a shift system during on call hours.
Applicants are required to be on the Specialist Register for Paediatrics, have CCT in Neonatal Medicine or be within six months of obtaining it by the interview date. Full Registration with the GMC is essential. The post is based at Southmead Hospital. The Trust has teaching status and is linked with the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England. The appointee will be required to reside not more than 30 minutes travel by road from Southmead Hospital, Bristol, for on-call purposes or will be expected to be resident for their night shifts. Experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices or equivalent is essential. The successful candidates will be employed under Terms & Conditions of Service for Consultants (England) 2003.
