This post is a substantive appointment with a view to starting immediately to join our team of spinal surgeons in the Gloucestershire Spinal service, part of Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. A successful Trust with a strong track record of achievement, we are situated mainly on our two larger operational sites, Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and Cheltenham General Hospital, providing elective and acute services to Gloucestershire.
The successful applicants will be expected to work closely with the four established Orthopaedic Spine surgeons and the wider Orthopaedic team to support and develop our elective and emergency spinal surgical service.
He or she will also work closely within the multi-disciplinary Gloucestershire Spinal service (including Oncology, Microbiology and Radiology services), the Spinal assessment and treatment service provided by the MSK Orthopaedic Practitioners and the Pain Management Service.
The spinal department has undergone significant changes in recent years and this presents an opportunity for continued improvement and development of this important service within the excellent current team working environment.
In addition, the successful appointee will provide key input into the development of Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s plan to become a provider of specially commissioned complex spinal surgery.
The post holder will work with colleagues to provide services across the county including outpatient clinics and emergency referrals. We are a part of the regional spinal network of providers, linking with the complex spinal surgery unit at North Bristol Trust.
The current spinal team are committed to the recent GIRFT spine report. The applicant will be expected to participate in the general orthopaedic on call rota.
The successful candidate will be joining a department of 27 consultant orthopaedic consultants, supported by a team of associate specialists; specialty doctors as well deanery middle grades, specialist nurses and therapists.
There are dedicated orthopaedic outpatient departments at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and Cheltenham General Hospital, as well as dedicated laminar flow theatres on both sites.
You should possess MBBS and FRCS or equivalent, have completed a Higher Specialist Training Programme in Trauma and Orthopaedics and had fellowship training in spinal surgery.
You should possess full GMC Registration with a license to practise and be eligible for entry on the GMC Specialist Register or within six months of receipt of your Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview.

This is a full time post. However, any candidate who is unable, for personal reasons, to work full time will still be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis. Job share applicants are also welcome.
