Applications are requested for this exciting opportunity for a specialist in psychiatry at consultant level (or equivalent) to work in a growing Mental Health Department in Malawi, Africa. The applicant should have particular interest in teaching and curriculum development.  Research and management experience, and experience of working in a low- and middle-income country are desirable. 

The Department runs undergraduate and postgraduate courses in psychiatry with the support of the Scotland Malawi Mental Health Education Project (www.SMMHEP.org.uk). Clinical teaching takes place at the regional psychiatric hospital in Zomba and the psychiatric outpatient unit in the central hospital in Blantyre.

The post holder is expected to be responsible for organizing and developing the postgraduate teaching programme and teaching trainees. He or she is also expected to input into the undergraduate curriculum. 

The post-holder is expected to provide consultant clinical supervision to postgraduate trainees at Zomba Mental Hospital; and to contribute to research in the department. He or she is also expected to support and supervise volunteer psychiatrists organized by SMMHEP to help with undergraduate teaching.  Management responsibilities will depend on the seniority of the post holder. 

Malawi is a stable democracy, with a strong interest in improving mental health amongst its people. There are number of internationally and locally funded mental health development programmes in the country. The Department has strong links with regional research consortia, including the African Mental Health Research Initiative (AMARI) and the Sub-Saharan Africa Regional Partnership for Mental Health (SHARP),  which provide many research opportunities in the fast expanding field of Global Mental Health. 

The post-holder will have a strong link to the Scotland Malawi Mental Health Education Project, which may provide additional financial and other support to suitable applicants.

Start date is negotiable with commencement by September 2019 preferred.
