Consultant in Acute Medicine
Isle of Man - Consultant Careers
Noble’s Hospital - Isle of Man
We are looking to appoint a knowledgeable, enthusiastic and forward-thinking Consultant in Acute Medicine to join our current team of Acute Physicians working in our Acute Medical Unit at Noble's Hospital on the Isle of Man.
Within the Isle of Man's Department of Health & Social Care, our vision is to become the best small island based health and care system and our vision within AMU is to provide an exceptional level of clinical care to patients with acute medical problems.
To support this vision, we are looking for someone who will work together with the current AMU team to play a pivotal role in the management and further development of the AMU.
The Isle of Man, our hospital and healthcare system
Our National Health Service is separate to the UK NHS and is provided by a system based on that in the UK, but is independently financed and administered within the Isle of Man. This means that many of the changes brought about to the UK National Health Service, as a consequence of the extensive reorganisations of recent years have not been adopted in the Isle of Man.
Working in the Isle of Man provides a fantastic opportunity to step away from NHS pressures and demands and work within a friendly and supportive working environment just a stone's throw away from the UK itself.
The island has a lot to offer and those living here benefit from:
- A great work-life balance
- A relaxed way of life in a safe environment with low crime
- Fantastic lifestyle opportunities - You could enjoy an outdoor lifestyle - walking, diving, sailing, mountain biking and great beaches
- Low income tax rates, maximum rate being 20%
At Noble's hospital, we also take pride in being able to offer a workplace that:
- Is equipped to the latest standards
- Offers brilliant training and development opportunities - we have an Education and Training Centre with a simulation suite and library situated in the grounds
- Supports staff - we recognise the need for all medical staff on the Island to maintain connections with medicine in the United Kingdom, and we provide generous study Leave with pay and expenses to attend approved conferences and workshops.
- Has a great working environment - we're a close knit team who are driven to ensure we provide high quality healthcare services to the people on the island
If you would like to achieve a fantastic work-life balance with a professionally satisfying job whilst living in one of the safest, least congested and most beautiful parts of the British Isles then this is the job for you!

The Isle of Man is also offering a National Insurance Holiday Scheme which allows newly employed, relocated or returning residents to apply for a refund on their National Insurance contributions for their first year of living or returning to the Isle of Man, with refunds capped at £4,000. About the Post
Newly opened in 2003 Noble’s Hospital is the Islands’ only District General Hospital, situated on the outskirts of Douglas, the capital of the Isle of Man. It is equipped to the very latest standards with a total complement of 317 beds; the site also houses a combined education and training centre equipped with a comprehensive library, study rooms, lecture theatre and a state of the art simulation suite. There is also a cottage hospital, in Ramsey in the north of the Island, where some Consultant clinical sessions are held.
The Isle of Man has an aging population and as a result a large proportion of the acute medical take have age related presentations. Our Acute Medical Unit admits over 7000 patients per year, with 82% of these admissions being patients over 75, hence there is a significant demand on the skills of an experienced consultant in elderly medicine to input into the treatment of these patients. The Acute Medical Unit (AMU) is a 21 bedded ward and Ambulatory Care Unit (ACU) comprising four chairs, which is co-located with an ambulatory clinic room. On average, we admit 10 patients per day into AMU, with around 80% of admissions coming from the Emergency Department and the remainder directly admitted following GP referral.
In this post, you would provide consultant care for all patients on the AMU until such a time as they are either transferred to another ward/unit or discharged from hospital. In addition, you would be responsible for providing day-to-day clinical leadership of the AMU, working alongside the senior nurses and other key members of the multi-professional team.
The aim of the posts is to set a consistent standard of consultant cover for the AMU throughout the busiest period of the day, which is currently between 08.00 and 18.00, including both weekdays and weekends. You would be working closely with the colleagues across all disciplines to continue the development of an efficient, high quality service for acute medical admissions.
This is a full-time acute medicine post with no other specialty component. However, in recognition of the importance of the interaction of acute medicine with the rest of the hospital there is potential for an individual in this post to develop a new or existing specialist interest.
We are currently undergoing a significant medical services transformation programme at the moment, with front line acute medical care being delivered through a more generalised model rather than a specialised model. Part of this transformation will include improvements in the management of elderly and frail patients and an increase in the numbers of consultants in geriatrics and acute medicine.
