Applications are invited for the post of Urology Consultant within the Bristol Urology Institute (BUI) with special interest and experience in Renal Surgery.
Based at Southmead Hospital, Bristol, the BUI is a tertiary referral centre and is the largest Urology department in the South West and one of the largest in the country, offering care for all urological conditions.
The service is well supported from oncologists at the Bristol Haematology and Oncology centre and by a group of experienced and dedicated Cancer Nurse Specialists. We are a close-knit team, across all levels and value collaborative working. We also welcome new ideas as we are constantly striving to improve our service to all our patients.
The Bristol Urological Institute (BUI) was founded at Southmead Hospital in 1994 to concentrate the teaching and research activities of the Bristol urologists and colleagues in the Southwest of England. It provides a comprehensive urology service and, following a period of significant expansion, has recently been reconfigured to create a single centre of excellence in North Bristol. This centre of excellence delivers improved clinical outcomes for patients and provides a better patient experience.
All the surgical inpatient and day case urology services was consolidated in to the new Southmead Hospital (the ‘Hub’), with ‘spoke’ sites providing outpatient appointments and some diagnostic services at locations across Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire (BNSSG).
The department provides and manages inpatient, day case and outpatient urology services for the city of Bristol. It consists of three dedicated theatres running Monday to Friday (including three session days) plus additional lists in other theatres.
A dedicated urology outpatient department delivers a diagnostic service including dedicated One Stop clinics for all new patients, and flexible cystoscopy lists. Transrectal ultrasound scanning (TRUS) is available in both the Urology outpatient department and theatres. The BUI is also leading the way in the adoption of Transperineal Template biopsy under local anaesthesia in the region.
There are general urology inpatient beds on the dedicated urology ward and the department also has access to beds on a short-stay ward for day care patients and those having an overnight stay.
There is both a Urodynamics service and an onsite Lithotripsy service. The department is the regional centre for complex urological cancer care.
North Bristol NHS Trust is a progressive and ambitious organisation providing hospital and community healthcare. It is a specialist regional centre for Major Trauma, Neurosciences, Plastics and Burns, Orthopaedics and Renal Services with a turnover in excess of £515m. The trust is currently undergoing one of the largest transformation programmes in the NHS having moved into the new £430 million hospital in May 2014.
The Trust has teaching status and is linked with the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England. You will have undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training opportunities and will be actively involved in the training and supervision of Junior Medical Staff and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
The BUI has a long history of urological research which has led to developments in the fields of urodynamics, robotic surgery and cancer care. We are proud of our achievements and keen to continue our successes into the future.
Bristol is a vibrant and exciting city with easy access to the West Country, Wales, The Midlands and to London.
Experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices or equivalent is essential.
