CONSULTANT in Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine
This post provides an opportunity to combine general anaesthesia with a specialist interest in Perioperative Medicine in an award winning small hospital covering a large geographical area between the Yorkshire Dales and Bradford. A breakdown of the draft job plan for the post is included in the information pack. A wide range of general experience in Anaesthetics, obstetrics and Critical Care is essential.
The successful applicant will join a team of enthusiastic anaesthetists who can offer expertise and training in quality improvement, leadership and sustainability and regional anaesthesia. The department is in the final stages of gaining Anaesthesia Clinical Services Accreditation. The department was commended by ACSA in many aspects including team communication, perioperative fasting and anticoagulant management, simulation training and Specialty Doctor career development. Use of System One IT provides seamless links with local GPs, supports perioperative pathways, and was commended as outstanding by the CQC. A business case is currently being developed for Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET).
This is a dynamic department and the successful applicant will be required to contribute to ongoing service development. We expect involvement in our existing quality improvement projects and also welcome ideas for new work streams. We strongly encourage leadership development. There is a trust leadership programme in place and study leave is encouraged for this. We also believe in maintaining work life balance. The department has a programme of social events and the Yorkshire Dales is in an area of outstanding natural beauty with many outdoor activities available.
We maintain a 1 in 16 general consultant on call rota which provides the flexibility and sustainability we need to provide high quality critical care, maternity and emergency anaesthesia services for our patients. The initial job plan is for 10 PA’s with opportunity for extra PA’s (up to 12 in total). Time is allocated within job plans for any additional responsibilities in addition to SPA time. Professional leave is available for additional responsibilities in addition to study leave.

The post holder will be offered 1 PA ‘induction and leadership development time’ for the first year to embed as a consultant at Airedale, in addition to their 1.5 SPA. This allows new consultants time to perform core CPD such as clinical and educational supervisor training and duty of candour training as well as receiving mentoring and coaching as necessary, in addition to their study leave allocation. Shadowing colleagues to gain insights into how different clinical areas and leadership roles work is also recommended.
It is anticipated that the expansion of new consultant posts will lead to a further expansion of out of hours consultant support during the evening and weekend daytimes in order to provide a consultant dedicated to critical care during these periods 7 days a week. It is an expectation of this post that this will be supported by the post holder within the limits of a 10PA job plan.
As well as new Consultants, we welcome applications from established Consultants. There may be the opportunity to modify the draft job plan to accommodate specific commitments or skills. Job plans greater than 10 PAs are also available on request. We encourage informal discussion of this before interviews.
