Consultant Vascular Surgeons to the South Yorkshire & Bassetlaw Regional Vascular Service (4 posts)
We are seeking to recruit Consultant Vascular Surgeons as the first appointments to the newly formed South Yorkshire & Bassetlaw Regional Vascular Service. This service is a formal alliance between Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and Doncaster & Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trusts (STH and DBTH respectively). These posts will have the opportunity to contribute to the establishment and development of this innovative and exciting approach to ensuring high quality vascular services across two sites that are closely aligned to other DGHs in the area and the Major Trauma Centre at the Northern General Hospital. These initial posts will cover gaps created due to vacancies at STH, and therefore the primary activity will be at STH.
The Alliance is the embodiment of a commitment by STH and DBTH to establish a “Single Service, Two Site” model for the delivery of Vascular Services to the 1.8m population of South Yorkshire & Bassetlaw. It is recognised that a lack of clarity regarding the future direction has stifled development of Vascular Services in the region over recent years; this recent commitment will enable rapid construction of a sustainable and vibrant service. These posts represent an opportunity to be involved in the development phase, which will be challenging but also rewarding for individuals who bring commitment to building a high quality Vascular Service that delivers outstanding care across the region.
The Alliance has the full support of both organisations and its development has been supported by the relevant Chief Executives and Medical Directors. Over coming months the Alliance will appoint a Regional Clinical Director for the Service as well as Regional Clinical Leads for Vascular Surgery and Vascular Interventional Radiology. Appointees through this process will be afforded the opportunity to express an interest in these leadership roles. In parallel, a full governance structure will be established to oversee the operational delivery of Vascular Services and provide a framework for the development of the service.
It is recognised that the Sheffield and Doncaster services have been established on different clinical models with participation in endovascular work by surgeons being more developed in Doncaster. The future service model at both locations will be a collaborative approach to the management of vascular patients. There will now be weekly surgeon-led endovascular lists within the angio suite at STH, in order to enable surgeons with the appropriate background to establish and maintain endovascular skills as lead operators.
STH and DBTH currently have different surgical rota models. At DBTH, a Surgeon of the Week (SOTW) model has become well-established, and offers strengths in terms of continuity of care and collaborative management of patients. At STH, the current arrangement is an 8 week rolling rota, designed to be staffed by eight people, with fixed commitments. A review of the most appropriate arrangement to underpin the development of the regional service is currently underway, such that candidates should be aware that their initial job plan is likely to be subject to change.
