The Canterbury District Health Board systematically plan, fund and deliver care to almost 600,000 people that live in the Canterbury region. The Canterbury Health System is a world leader in the delivery of integrated health care. Our main focus is placing people (staff and patients alike) at the centre of everything we do.
The Canterbury Eye Service comprises 13 Ophthalmologists covering all sub-speciality areas with a fellow, vocational and non-vocational registrars and a team of dedicated support staff. The department is associated with the Christchurch School of Medicine, teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate students. Vocational training in Ophthalmology is an important component of the teaching activities of the Department.
We have 2 vacancies for full-time or part-time vocationally trained Ophthalmologists to join the Canterbury Eye Service. You will be providing tertiary services across the South Island. These positions are available from September 2019 and we are open to the availability of successful candidates.
Vacancy 1 is to join our Vitreo-Retinal team. With two other Ophthalmologists you will be part of a tertiary referral service for the top half of the South Island, servicing a population of around 1,000,000. The VR team is also heavily involved in the delivery of medical retina services, so an interest in both medical and surgical retina would be beneficial.
Vacancy 2 is a full-time role and Ophthalmologists with any sub-specialty will be considered.
You must have a qualification that allows Vocational Registration as an Ophthalmologist with the Medical Council of New Zealand. It would be preferred if you have a Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO).
We have recently moved into a new purpose built outpatient building alongside Christchurch Hospital which supports our busy service providing care to more than 50,000 patients per annum. We have dedicated ophthalmic theaters in the adjacent main hospital campus and we work collaboratively with other services in the hospital. We are a busy service providing care to Christchurch and the greater Canterbury Region. If you are successful in this role you would be part of a large and motivated team of general and specialist trained Ophthalmologists, Orthoptists, Optometrists, Nurses, Technicians, Administrators and Medical Secretaries.
