Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Colorectal Surgeon within the Hull University Teaching Hospital. The successful candidate will become one of a team of 8 Consultant Colorectal Surgeons based at Castle Hill Hospital.  Acute services are based on the Hull Royal Infirmary site. The Colorectal service is provided from a 40 bedded elective inpatient ward on the Castle Hill site, of which 8 beds are designated high observation for recovery after major abdominal surgery.  The service has inpatient surgery and day surgery sessions at the Castle Hill site, endoscopy sessions at both Castle Hill and Hull Royal sites supported by outpatient clinics on both sites, East Riding Community Hospital and Alfred Bean Hospital.  Approximately 6200 new referrals are seen by the department annually along with 9400 reviews.  An increasing number of these are tertiary referrals, particularly for rectal preservation techniques, advanced pelvic malignancy and the evaluation and treatment of functional bowel disorders.  Our Colorectal Nurse Practitioners have specialist clinics for cancer follow-up and there are dedicated family history clinics.

The Acute Surgical service is provided from a 46 bedded ward on the Hull Royal Infirmary site.  The service operates in collaboration with the Upper GI unit. Cover is provided by a day consultant working from 8am to 6pm and a separate night consultant resident 6pm to 10pm and providing overnight cover oncall Both consultants work 7 days with no other commitments during that week on a 1:14 basis. Departmental colleagues provide cover for existing inpatients at Castle Hill Hospital.
