Consultant in Paediatric Palliative Medicine
Applications are invited for a 10 PA Consultant in Paediatric Palliative Medicine based at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust. The post holder will be an integral part of the Louis Dundas Centre for Paediatric Palliative Care and Haematology Oncology Outreach Team, in the Blood Cells and Cancer Directorate.
The Louis Dundas Centre (LDC) at Great Ormond Street Hospital is one of the leading paediatric palliative care teams in Europe. The Centre aims to bring together academic research and clinical expertise to ensure that children and families have access to highly-skilled professionals delivering care of the highest standard. The Centre is hosted by Great Ormond Street and the UCL Institute of Child Health and led by the True Colours Chair in Palliative Care for Children and Young People.
The LDC provides palliative care services to the in-patient areas when caring for children with complex life-limiting or life-threatening illness and also for those receiving end of life care. The medical consultants provide clinical support and leadership on a weekly rotational basis to the GOSH in patients to maintain continuity of care.
The LDC provides a referral service for palliative care to all units within GOSH, to patients referred externally from within Greater London, outside London and to children referred from Children’s Hospices where there is a Service Level Agreement (SLA) with GOSH. Much of the team’s activity is outreach work in the patients’ homes, local hospital or hospice, undertaken with shared care hospitals, community based and primary health care teams.
The post holder will take lead responsibility for palliative care patients within a defined geographical area, which will be agreed at the time of appointment. The appointee is expected to manage their own case load in addition to supporting the work of the Specialist Registrar(s), Clinical Fellows and Clinical Nurse Specialists, who also work on a geographical basis.
Joining a team of 3 consultants, the post holder must be available during the week to see patients both at GOSH and in the community. There is a monthly palliative care outpatient clinic that is shared between the consultants and there are regular in-patient ward rounds following daily (Monday to Friday) team hand over meetings when covering the inpatients. This post has an on-call commitment of 1 in 4.
You will possess MRCPCH or equivalent specialist qualification and have completed a minimum of 2 years training in paediatric palliative medicine.
