Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Consultant Rheumatologist (6 PA post)

We are seeking an enthusiastic colleague to work with the existing team of five Consultants (three full time and two part time).

This is a general rheumatology post and the clinical workload involves outpatient clinics, inpatient referrals and cover to the Day Therapy Unit. The department sees the full range of rheumatological conditions, particularly inflammatory arthritis, connective tissue diseases and soft tissue rheumatism, plus offers specialist clinics in Sjogren’s syndrome, paediatrics, vasculitis, ILD and bone health. The department is supported by a full orthopaedic service, including spinal surgery; and full radiology facilities. There is opportunity for the successful applicant to maintain and develop a sub-speciality interest.

The Great Western Hospital has 435 beds plus a 60-bedded Intermediate Care Unit on site.  There are comprehensive diagnostics including MRI/CT and PACS.

The number of inpatient admissions is small, with many more patients treated as day cases (currently 4-500 day case patients per annum). Patients are also managed on our Day Therapy Unit, which also caters for Haematology, Oncology and Pain patients. It is the ideal environment for patients requiring steroid infusions, injectable immunosuppressive agents, and specialised joint injections.

The post holder is required to hold a CCT or be within 6 months of receiving CCT at the time of interview. As such the post holder should be trained in all aspects of clinical rheumatology.

The Great Western Hospital opened in 2002 with well appointed accommodation for staff and patients. The hospital is a Teaching Hospital for undergraduate students from both Oxford and Bristol Universities. The Trust provides acute services to Swindon and the surrounding areas (catchment 344,000) and community services to Wiltshire (catchment 750,000).

Swindon is an expanding town, which sits adjacent to the M4, at the heart of Southern Central England in the Wiltshire countryside. The Marlborough Downs, the Cotswolds and the towns of Oxford, Bath and Bristol are all within easy reach.
