Consultant in General Paediatrics
Consultant General Paediatrician
“Right now we are building our future”
We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic, innovative, driven Paediatrician with a special interest that complements the needs of our department. We would particularly welcome a specialist interest in diabetes/endocrinology, nephrology or neurodisability. We are passionate about our ethos and philosophy and are driven to provide the best care for our patients. We are moving into our new Acute Hospital “The Midland Met” in 2022, with support from the Department of Health to complete the build, and Paediatric Medicine has 40 beds over 2 wards and includes 6 HDU beds and 6 Adolescent bays. The first UK clinical skills lab will be embedded within MMH allowing emphasis on education within the department. The new state of the art acute hospital in Grove Lane, Smethwick will bring together all acute services onto one site.
The Paediatric unit is currently hosted across two sites with a number of outpatient specialty services being delivered, including the paediatric allergy service and diabetes service. The Consultants provide clinical care for patients admitted to the City Hospital Assessment Unit on a rotating basis and also the main paediatric Unit at Sandwell Hospital on a 1 in 12 ‘hot week’ model. HDU patients are looked after in selected areas on the wards throughout the year.
The Paediatric Medicine department is renowned for being a popular site for trainees who have a regular in-house teaching programme. Trainees are also involved in teaching and education. APLS is run within the trust by paediatric consultants. The department has regular presentations at local, national and international meetings of its work, services and innovation.
The successful candidate will be within 6 months of obtaining a CCT in Paediatrics.
Birmingham is a vibrant, multi-cultural city and it is a very exciting place to live and work. It has a population of 1.1 million, the youngest in Europe. Its residents speak over 140 languages and blend different cultures and nationalities with history that is rich in industrial heritage.
The area boasts affordable housing with popular residential districts within an easy commute to either of the main hospital sites. There are a number of very good schools and colleges locally (including a number of independent and grammar schools such as the King Edwards Schools). Birmingham is a very green city with more than 8,000 acres of green space including impressive parks. Due to our central location and good motorway connections we are in easy reach of a number of beautiful rural locations including the Peak District, Cannock Chase, the Lickey Hills and the Cotswolds.
