UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology

Dementia Research Centre

Applications are invited for two Clinical Research Fellows in the Dementia Research Centre, UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology. The postholders will be centrally involved in the continuing conduct of Insight 46, an ongoing neuroscience study aiming to recruit 500 members of the MRC National Survey for Health and Development 1946 birth cohort. The postholders will be responsible for clinical assessment of study members, obtaining multi-modal (PET/MR) imaging, blood sampling for genetics and biobanking, and cerebrospinal fluid sampling. Recruitment to the study is well advanced; a key component will be the longitudinal follow-up of study members to determine clinical and biomarker changes over time.

The postholders will work closely with the study coordinators, other researchers in the DRC clinical and imaging team, the MRC Unit for Lifelong Health and Ageing, Leonard Wolfson Experimental Neurology Centre, and Institute of Nuclear Medicine, all at UCL. The project is a clinical translational project with opportunities to gain experience and skills in cognitive assessment, MR and PET imaging, epidemiology, life-course analysis, dementia biomarkers and genetics, and is suitable for those seeking a career in clinical neuroscience. The working environment is collective and multidisciplinary. In addition to training in a wide range of clinical skills relevant to studies of neurodegeneration and ageing, the postholders will receive clinical training in all aspects of Dementia with the opportunity to undertake General Neurology Clinics. The postholders will also be centrally involved in the delivery of a diagnostic/research dementia lumbar puncture clinic. Honorary clinical contracts will be sought from UCLH NHS FT for which a DBS check will be required.

Applicants must be Registered medical practitioners permitted to practise in the UK, have completed general medical training and have experience in Neurology to SHO/ST2 or equivalent level, and hold MRCP or equivalent postgraduate qualification. Applicants will have experience in lumbar puncture, a very high level of consideration and care for patients and research subjects and will be able   to demonstrate a record of academic excellence. Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential.

The posts are available from June 2019 and are funded by a grant from ARUK until August 2020 in the first instance.  Starting salary on the UCL CL7 scale £35,661 to £44,392 per annum including London Allowance, superannuable.
