Could you take overall management of the surgical service and work collaboratively in the management of surgical cases?
A sub-tropical island of spectacular and beautiful landscapes in the South Atlantic with a warm and friendly population of 4,500, St Helena is a self-governing overseas territory of the UK. Following the opening of its international airport in October 2017, St Helena is better placed to develop both economically and socially. The 28-bed General Hospital in the capital, Jamestown, covers all areas of acute medical and surgical care.
On-call and available for any surgical procedures 24 hours per day, you will review and advise on referral and distant advice criteria for surgical cases and participate in the general practice clinics, sharing out-patient and in-patient duties. You will also train nurses and other healthcare workers and participate in weekly half hour CPD sessions with medical officers. A final progress report will be required.
You will join a team providing general medical care to all Island residents and visitors running general medicine clinics in the general hospital and at other locations and caring for hospital inpatients. You will play an active part in health promotion and preventative care programmes and contribute to the clinical governance committee.
With full GMC registration, or eligibility for same, and good standing with that body, you should have substantial postgraduate experience in general surgery including orthopaedics, with experience of laparoscopic operations and in upper and lower endoscopy. Holding FRCS or equivalent qualification you should also hold MB, ChB or BM, BS, BAO, BCH.
