Appointment for a Specialty Doctor in Forensic Psychiatry

Applications are invited for appointment to the post of Specialty Doctor in Adult Forensic Psychiatry. The post available is an in-patient Forensic Psychiatry post based at Ravenswood House Medium Secure unit in Fareham.

This vacancy is not part of the Wessex Core Psychiatry and GP Training rotation.

The post is whole-time. Requests for less than full time working will be considered.There is no on-call / out-of-hours working associated with this post, although successful candidates may wish to discuss as to whether they wish to opt in to out-of-hours working.

Ravenswood House was one of the first regional secure hospitals in the country, established in 1985 as a result of the recommendations in the Butler and Glancy Committees. Ravenswood House has 79 beds for adult male in-patients detained under Part II or III of the Mental Health Act 1983/2007. There are 5 consultant Forensic Psychiatrists based here and the post will be based within a consultant team.

The area covered by the trust has excellent communication links with fast trains to London in just over an hour from Southampton, a local airport with flights to many European destinations and good road links to the south west, along the south coast, towards London via the M3 and towards Oxford via the A34. The area includes thriving towns and areas of natural beauty such as the New Forest and sailing locations along the south coast. The area contains many excellent state and private schools.

The post will not be recognized for training but the Trust will provide training and CPD opportunities in line with the requirements for Specialty Doctors.


Post holders will be required to have the ability to fulfil the travelling commitment of the posts with transport within the parameters of the Equality Act 2010.

Applicants must also hold full registration with a license to practice with the GMC at the time of the application.
