Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham is looking to appoint a Senior Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellow to start as soon as possible.

This is one of the busiest electrophysiology units in the country with 5 consultants. We undertake the full range of complex ablations including AF, VT and arrhythmias adult congenital heart disease. The post is ideally suited to a post CCT fellow looking to gain further experience before taking up a consultant post. We would expect the successful applicant to leave us fully trained in complex ablation and arrhythmia management and able to compete for tertiary hospital electrophysiology posts.

The University Hospital Birmingham is the major centre for cardiac electrophysiology with the second largest catchment area in the United Kingdom with 4.5 million; from Oswestry to Stafford to Rugby to Hay on Wye, and South Wales. There are 4 dedicated electrophysiology consultants and 3 Electrophysiology labs performing around 850 ablations a year, at least half of which are complex ablations (Atrial arrhythmias and ventricular tachycardia). We also have close links with the Grown-up congenital heart disease unit and frequently perform ablations in patients with congenital heart disease. In addition, the electrophysiology team contributes to an active device implantation service alongside a further three device consultants.

This post would suit a trainee reaching the end of sub specialty training in arrhythmia management including ablation +/- devices.

The appointee is expected to take responsibility for all patients undergoing electrophysiology procedures in the labs. The fellow will work with the EP registrars to ensure that all patients under the EP team are seen daily. Where suitably trained, the fellow will be expected to perform pre-procedure TOE to exclude left atrial thrombus when required prior to left atrial ablation. The Fellow will be trained in all aspects of cardiac electrophysiology. If appropriately trained they will be expected to implant single and dual chamber pacemakers and defibrillators.

The fellow will have two dedicated outpatient clinics a week with their own patient list. They may also be required to assist in a further specialist EP clinic. The fellow is expected to train the more junior members of the EP team and medical students attached to the firm
