he Department of Anaesthesia at King’s Denmark Hill (DH) is one of the busiest in the country giving approximately 43,000 anaesthetics per annum. The acquisition of the Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH) including two theatres at Sidcup, and re-opening the orthopaedic hub at Orpington as a focused elective site has enlarged the department by over a quarter allowing for an increased diversity of ideas and opportunities.

It incorporates all major specialties including Cardio-thoracic, Liver, Paediatrics, and Neurological Surgery, as well as Chronic and Acute Pain Relief. There is also an active Liver Transplantation program for which King’s is world famous. The Department is innovative and forward looking and has enjoyed considerable expansion in the past few years. There is a rotational programme for Core and Specialist Trainee Registrars within the South Thames Deanery. There are also a number of research posts (both medical and non-medical) associated with the Pain Research Group and the Liver Transplantation Programme.

The Cardiac Anaesthetic department currently has eleven consultants providing cover for around 950 major adult cardiac cases per year. Thoracic lists take place on two dedicated days every week. In addition, there is a daily cath-lab list requiring anaesthetic services for TAVI, electrophysiological and other procedures. A well established and successful TAVI programme exists with over 180 cases performed. Port access mitral valve surgery has been introduced years ago, and is now regularly performed, and endoscopic CABG is also undertaken.

The Denmark Hill Anaesthetic Department is part of the Urgent and Planned Care Division which comprises: Acute & Emergency Care, Post-Acute & Planned Medicine + Outpatients, Therapy, Rehabilitation & Allied Clinical Services, Pharmacy, Dental, Planned Surgical, Ophthalmology & Optometry, Theatres & Anaesthetics and Women’s Health.  The PRUH Department is part of the PRUH and South Sites Division.

King’s College Hospital requires a full time Consultant Anaesthetist with a subspecialty interest in Cardiac Anaesthesia. The post will be based at Denmark Hill.

They will have significant involvement in the delivery of Cardiac anaesthesia both during daytime cover and as part of the Cardiac consultant on-call rota. The departments cover most anaesthesia specialities, and a dynamic individual with supplementary interests would be welcomed.

In addition, the individual will be required to play an active role in the workload of the Anaesthetic Department while having a significant commitment to teaching and training of junior staff.

There will be 7.2 Programmed Activities of day time Direct Clinical Care, with the remainder being allocated for On Call (1.3 PA), Continual Professional Development (1 PA) and additional activities to promote innovation within the department (0.5 PA).  The post holder will join the Cardiac Anaesthetic Consultant on Call rota, which is a 1 in 8 non-resident rota.

The post-holder is required to be fully registered with the General Medical Council and on the Specialist Register at the date of interview, or be on a recognised training programme and within six months of being eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register.
