The Royal Liverpool & Broadgreen University Hospitals Trust (RLBUHT) is one of the largest and busiest teaching hospitals in the country. We serve around 2 million people and are highly regarded for our facilities, teaching and research. The Trust has around 1000 inpatient beds. Our 6,500 strong workforce provides emergency treatment, planned operations and medical care from the Royal Liverpool, Dental Hospital & Broadgreen sites. Our mission to provide the very best health care includes recruiting the best people. Our goal is to be a world-class centre, where patients receive the highest standards of care and the best people come to learn, work and research. The hospital includes a wide range of specialties as a regional tertiary care centre including Major Trauma, Urology, Respiratory Medicine, Interventional Radiology, Infectious Diseases, Renal Medicine and Haematology. A new £450 million hospital, including a laboratory block, is being built adjacent to the current Royal Liverpool University Hospital, and is expected to open in 2020.

Laboratory services for the RLBUHT are provided by Liverpool Clinical Laboratories (LCL). LCL is the largest pathology service provider in Cheshire and Merseyside, formed from the amalgamation of the pathology clinical services and laboratories of the Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (AUHT) and the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust (RLBUHT), processing over 5 million sample tests each year. The Haemato-oncology Diagnostic service (HODS) for the Merseyside & Cheshire Cancer Network (MCCN) is the only NICE IOG 2016 (NG 47) peer review compliant service in the NW of England and hosted by LCL. The service has a population base of 2 million and carries out primary reporting of haematological malignancies in line with NICE-IOG 2016 guidance, including all modalities of testing on liquid samples (flow cytometry, fine needle aspiration cytology and bone marrow aspirate samples, solid samples (lymph nodes and bone marrow trephines) and genetics/-omics testing (PCR based tests including RT-PCR, NGS panel testing, FISH testing and conventional karyotyping). These individual reports are then amalgamated into a single meaningful integrated report which is then received by the referring clinician through an online IT system. The service has close links with Academic Haematology in the University of Liverpool, enabling robust research and development.
