Chadburn Lectureships in Medical Education (Clinical and Communication Skills)
0.6 FTE Fixed Term Contract for 5 years
The Institute of Health Sciences Education are recruiting to two new exciting part-time (0.6 FTE) posts in Medical Education. These are funded through the Chadburn Lectureship scheme “to provide opportunities for doctors in training, whose personal circumstances make it difficult or impossible for them to give full-time commitment to their careers.” Applicants need to be doctors who have not yet completed training.
These will be five year posts focusing on clinical and communication skills education. They will also bring opportunities for a wider experience in medical education including assessment, curriculum development, evaluation and educational research, a diverse range of teaching modalities, and support in gaining an educational qualification.
These would be perfect posts for those with an interest in medical education and an enthusiasm for clinical and communication skills teaching and learning.
The Lecturers would be expected to maintain a license to practice and undertake some clinical work in addition to this post, however the Lecturer must work part-time overall – taking into account both educational and clinical duties.
Within the Centre for Medical Education, the Academic Unit for Clinical, Communication and Learning Skills (CCLSU) is responsible for delivery of the undergraduate clinical and communication skills curriculum. The Unit was awarded Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) in Clinical and Communication Skills by HEFCE, jointly with City University as part of its Strategic Alliance, in 2005-2010.
The combined Clinical and Communication Skills Lecturer posts exist to deliver teaching on both the clinical and the communication skills curriculum and promote integration of these complimentary skills within the evolving curriculum.
These new posts, arising from increased student numbers on the MBBS programme, will deliver teaching initially at the Robin Brook Clinical Skills Centre, St Bartholomew’s Hospital and in due course may be re-located to our partner hospital satellite campus at Ilford. A large part of their initial role will be in building up a network of local clinical and communication skills tutors, and training them. The post-holder will both teach undergraduates and supervise more junior teachers.
Applicants should have a medical degree and experience of teaching methods for communication including small group learning, role-play and incorporation of patient feedback. They should also have experience of teaching clinical skills in simulation.
The post is 0.6 FTE and on a Fixed-Term 5-year contract. Salary will be £47,139 FTE (pro-rata). Benefits include 30 days’ annual leave, pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.
Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
