Whangarei Hospital

Whangarei is the largest hospital in Northland, providing secondary care services for the region, supported by three regional hospitals. Northland covers an area of 12,600 square kilometres and has a population of approximately 160,000. As a region Northland is renowned for its beautiful beaches and relaxed lifestyle.

Northland District Health Board is committed to delivering care in a way that meets the needs of patients and their families. This is done in an environment which supports staff, both in the delivery of their work and in their personal development based on our organisational Values:

  • People First – People are central to all that we do
  • Respect – We treat others as we would like to be treated
  • Caring – We nurture those around us and treat all with dignity and compassion
  • Communication - We communicate safely, openly and with respect to promote clear understanding
  • Excellence - Our attitude of excellence inspires success, competence, confidence and innovation

We are seeking an Ophthalmology Registrar to join our team of Eye Consultants, specialist nurses and Technicians.

There are four Consultant Ophthalmologists providing a wide range of elective and acute services to Northland. We offer a general ophthalmology experience which is only available in a district hospital setting. We have a very high incidence of skin cancers including basal
cell carcinoma and you will get broad experience of lid surgery. Diabetes is extremely common in the North, and you will gain experience of laser and intravitreal injections in the management of this, and of ARMD. We have ultrasound and OCT available, and Pascal and YAG lasers.

As the sole ophthalmic registrar you will gain much experience, and there is the opportunity for extensive on the job teaching from the consultant staff with whom you will work in a one on one situation. On call with a consultant cover you will get experience of acute ophthalmology with the opportunity for experience of Ophthalmic Trauma being invaluable in our rural setting.
We offer a specialty wide service with surgeons with special interests in Paediatric Ophthalmology, Anterior Segment and Medical retina, and a truly general ophthalmology clinic setup. Other than Vitreo-retinal work which is referred to Auckland we provide surgical management of most eye conditions.

Our training program includes weekly teaching including journal club and teaching for registrars, audits and regular M&M meetings are held and you will be encouraged to take part in the teaching program. You will be closely supervised and supported in clinics and theatres in the acute and elective settings.

Whangarei provides secondary care services to a large rural region with many high health needs. Due to the population make up and the unselected nature of our admissions Registrars gain experience managing a wide variety of conditions including rarer conditions such as rheumatic fever, tuberculosis and meningococcal disease.

Before applying you must have either general registration or be eligible for registration with the New Zealand Medical Council (www.mcnz.org.nz). Check if you’re eligible here:
