X2 Consultant Urological Surgeons with Interest in Robotic Pelvic Oncology

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Urological Surgeon within the Bristol Urology Institute (BUI) providing specialist services in Robotic Pelvic Oncology. Based at Southmead Hospital, Bristol, the BUI is a tertiary referral centre and is the largest Urology department in the South West and one of the largest in the country, offering care for all urological conditions.

The service is well supported from oncologists at the Bristol Haematology and Oncology centre and by a group of experienced and dedicated Cancer Nurse Specialists. We are a close-knit team, across all levels and value collaborative working. We also welcome new ideas as we are constantly striving to improve our service to all our patients.

The department has state of the art theatre facilities including three dedicated urology theatres, one with a Da Vinci Robot (X) to support its oncological work as the Network Centre for Avon, Somerset and Wiltshire. Funding approval for a second robot has just been granted and it is expected to arrive in April/May 2019. The robot is now routinely used for laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, radical cystectomy plus reconstruction, laparoscopic partial nephrectomy and pyeloplasty and plans to extend its use in urology and other specialties are underway. The BUI has a long history of urological research which has led to developments in the fields of urodynamics, robotic surgery and cancer care. We are proud of our achievements and keen to continue our successes in to the future.

North Bristol NHS Trust is a progressive and ambitious organisation providing hospital and community healthcare. It is a specialist regional centre for Major Trauma, Neurosciences, Plastics and Burns, Orthopaedics and Renal Services with a turnover in excess of £515m. The trust is currently undergoing one of the largest transformation programmes in the NHS having moved into the new £430 million hospital in May 2014. The Trust has teaching status and is linked with the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England. You will have undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training opportunities and will be actively involved in the training and supervision of Junior Medical Staff and other members of the multidisciplinary team.

The appointed consultants will contribute to elective and emergency work in Bristol, as well as specialist work in other neighbouring Trusts that are part of our Urology Network. In addition to specialist services, the potholder will also be expected to provide a general urology service and will contribute towards the provision of emergency urology services. We are looking for enthusiastic and energetic candidates who will complement our current teams.

The postholder will work a flexible job plan of 10PA per week including on calls. This will assist the department in achieving its targets in both cancer and non-cancer urology. Applicants are required to be on the Specialist Register for Urology, have CCT in Urology or be within six months of obtaining it by the interview date. Full Registration with the GMC is essential. Experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices or equivalent is essential.

The appointee is required to reside not more than 30 minutes travel by road from Southmead Hospital, Bristol, for on-call purposes. Bristol is a vibrant and exciting city with easy access to the West Country, Wales, The Midlands and to London.
